I didn't know where to put this. I think maybe we need a lawsuit thread.

Class Action filed against the makers of Canidae Dog Food
Madison, Wisconsin, January 26, 2009 – A class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of dog owners nationwide against the makers of CANIDAE brand dog food, seeking payment of veterinarian bills for dogs who allegedly took ill after consuming the food between last summer and the present. The lawsuit also asks the Court to order the defendants, Canidae Corporation and Diamond Pet Foods, to launch a corrective informational campaign. Affected dogs have experienced rectal bleeding, loose and bloody stools, lethargy, and death, according to consumer complaints posted on internet forums and websites.

“We can’t push back the clock: if hundreds or thousands of dogs have suffered, that can’t be reversed. But the lawsuit at least gives dogs and their owners an avenue for redress,” stated Ilan Chorowsky, one of the plaintiff’s lawyers with the Progressive Law Group, which has offices in Madison, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois. The Animal Law Center, Rosner & Mansfield LLP, and Doyle Lowther LLP also represent the plaintiff.

Further information about the lawsuit is available at:

I still don't understand the basis of the lawsuit though.  What exactly was the problem, if it wasn't contamination.  Was it the formula change to high meat proteins that made the dogs sick?

This sounds eerily similar to what some pet owners have been experiencing with various Nutro pet foods. But seeing how they are manufactured by two different companies, maybe it is a common ingredient that they are each using in their foods? I would be curious to know if either brand has ever been tested........

I would hope the lawyers test the food. I also wonder if they are using the same ingredient. It will be interesting to see how things are done with this one.

I myself really don't think its the high protein. That has been researched to death. With so many companies now using high protein in their food. I would think if that was the cause there would many many more complaints against many companies.

There is a new post on Consumer Affairs by a vet tech whose 5 dogs all became ill with "tremors, seizures and vomiting bile" allegedly after eating the new formula of Canidae. Three of the dogs also developed triple phosphate crystals. More posts can be read here.  http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/canidae.html
