PEANUT BUTTER PROBE EXPANDS; TAKES ON NEW URGENCY.    "Although the investigation has gone into high gear, Food and Drug Administration officials say much of their information remains sketchy. And new cases are still being reported.

"This is a very active investigation, but we don't yet have the data to provide consumers with specifics about what brands or products they should avoid," said Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA's food safety center. Although salmonella bacteria has been found at the Georgia plant, for example, more tests are needed to see if it matches the strain that has gotten people sick.

But clearly, what began as an investigation of bulk peanut butter shipped to nursing homes and institutional cafeterias is now much broader. It includes not just peanut butter, but baked goods and other products that contain peanuts and are sold directly to consumers. Health officials say as many as one-third of the people who got sick did not recall eating peanut butter."                                                                                                                    http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2009-01-16-salmonella-outbreak_N.htm?csp=34

KELLOGGS RECALLS MORE PEANUT BUTTER PRODUCTS; "The recall includes Austin and Keebler branded Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, as well as some snack-size packs of Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies and Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies.                                                                                                                                Sandra Williams, a compliance officer with the Food and Drug Administration in Detroit, advised consumers not to eat the products and to contact a doctor if they have any symptoms. She also urged careful disposal of the tainted products to avoid the risk of homeless people finding and eating them."                                  http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2009/01/17/ap5934392.html

FDA: Avoid Peanut Butter Products;       "Food and Drug Administration has extended its warning about possible salmonella contamination of peanut butter.

Products containing peanut butter are now suspect. That's in addition to peanut butter bought in bulk by large institutions such as hospitals and schools.

The warning covers products such as cookies, crackers, ice cream, cereal and candy that contain peanut butter. On Friday, Keebler and Austin voluntarily recalled various types of peanut butter crackers.

The FDA says peanut butter sold in retail stores is not a problem.

But it suggests that people who have products containing peanut butter on their shelves hold off on eating them until more is known."                                           http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=99522010&ft=1&f=1003

More companies are voluntarily recalling their products containing peanut butter. Updated info can be found on the FDA's website.  http://www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.html
