Please say a little prayer for my Maine Coon Rufus.
He's not doing well at all
Never had a solid stool since the day I got him, but now it's liquid with blood.
Have had many urine problems with him and the past few days it's been totally out of control.

The poor guy looks and feels like hell.
We see the vet for the 4th time this week.

My gut tells me he has cancer, somewhere, and it's spreading.............. Sad   Cry

I am very sorry to hear this Peg. Hoping the vet can get this figured out and get the little guy on track.  Kiss

Oh, poor dear Rufus.  So sorry to hear this Peg.  If it's bright red blood in his stool, it's more likely not cancer.  Black tarry stool can be a sign of cancer, but usually when you can see the red blood it's not.  If he's had diarrhea for a while, could just be an irritated colon.  How have you treated him in the past for the diarrhea?  I've had this problem and used Flagyl with some success. Is he eating okay and active?  What are the urine problems now, the frequency?  I'm sure Angel Vet will get a handle on this in no time.  Please try not to worry until you can see her.  Prayers and wishes for Rufus to get better real soon.

Thank you all for your thoughts, good wishes and prayers.   Kiss
Rufus is a bit better this morning. Lips sealed
This diarrhea thing with him has been ongoing since the day we adopted him.........June 4, 2003.  He has been tested for everything under the sun and just recently had a biopsy of the stomach, intestines, liver, jujenum, and bladder.  He has had continuous enlargement of the mesenteric lymph nodes....always show up on US, and recent biopsy of a mesenteric node only showed chronic inflammation, no hyperplasia.

He has been dewormed, given many doses of flagyl, all unsuccessful.
The biopsy of the stomach showed H.Pylori and we did the 3 week course of triple antibiotics.  All to no avail.

Needless to say, between the rectum and the urinary issues, the poor boy's bum practically glows in the dark.  He also seems more skittish than usual.

I looked through all his mountains of tests and results and he had never had his thyroid function tested.  He meets some of the symptoms..........fierce appetite with no weight gain, restless...........I hope to pursue this with my vet.

Right now I am still awaiting a copper toxicity test that we sent to the lab last week.
Rufus was exposed to 2 foods in the 5+ years that I've had him........he is 10 now.........and both of those foods tested extremely high in copper.  The copper test takes about 2 weeks for an answer.

His urine probelms are also an ongoing battle.  Through biopsy, he was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis.  Half the poor boy's bladder was covered in scar tissue, some of which the vet was able to pare down a bit.  It was determined that some scar tissue was the result of his bladder being lacerated, before I got him and there were also indications that his bladder had been popped.  According to my vet, over aggressive attempts to express urine, can result in the bladder popping and healing with scar tissue.  Some of his litter box aversions have been, I'm sure, just a result of his being so sore back there.  pH is better as of this  morning, it had been as high as 8  Shocked 2 days ago.  His needs to be between 6 and 6.5 otherwise we have major problems.

I am also having some success with his box issues by using Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract Litter mixed with the World's Best.

For all that is plaguing this poor doll, you would expect him to be the most viscious and skittish guy on the planet.  We just had snuggies before and his purrs are deafening.  I know he knows, I am trying so hard to help him, as is my angel vet.  Four other vets before her suggested PTS or...........and this one made me totally nuts.............ABANDON AT A SHELTER Angry   Angry

Peg, so sorry to hear this heart-breaking story about your baby Rufus.  But I'm so happy to hear he's a little better this morning.  I'm glad you mentioned the Flagyl (Metronidazole).  Is he still on it?  I didn't realize all the side effects this drug can have if the exact proper dosage is not correctly determined.  I've used it in the past but didn't realize how toxic it can be.

In fact, on another forum I belong to, Feline Assisted Feeding at Yahoo, yesterday and today there's been a long discussion on how toxic it can be as one member is treating her kitty for an overdose of it right now.

I suggest if you don't belong to this group, please join to read these latest topics on it.  Here's the group url:

Continued prayers and wishes to our guy Rufus.

Hi Peg,

I'm so sorry to hear your dear guy is having so many problems, but I hope your vet is able to get a handle on what's going on and give him some relief. It certainly sounds like he's had more than his share of health problems!

I'll send some positive thoughts your way!

It has been a very long time since we have had any news about Rufus. I hope both he and his Meowmie are doing well.

Thank you Bonkers for thinking of us.
We have been having some rather crummy issues in this household.

Much is going on, some good and some awful but we will get through this.

Rufus has been on Manuka+16 Honey for his diarrhea and h.pylori for about 3 weeks now.  I put 1/2 tsp of the honey in a number 4 capsule and he has his "pilly willies" twice a day.  It's been about 3 weeks and it seems to be helping just a wee bit........................

I'll be back as I miss you all terribly.
It's been a very rough month for kitties in this household.
Been a little tough for me too...........seriously sleep deprived.

Good night for now   Kiss

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having many issues at home, Coontuffy.  I was virtually running on "empty" the last weeks of Kaffe's illness so I can't imagine how beyond exhausted you must be feeling right now.  I pray there will come major impovements and that all your ministrations bear fruit real soon.  {{{Hugs}}} and headbutts to you and Rufus and the gang.

Glad to see you back. Sorry to hear you have been having a rough time. has the vet recommended any anti-biotics for h-pylori. They cleared Misty's up a few years back in 2 weeks.

Please also check out Bio-preparation. You can call and talk with Dr. Roland and he can give you his recommendations. This is what I did for Misty's mast cell. I have also been able to take her off most of her supplements.
