I have a cat who has IBD. Fromm's shredded chicken was one food that he was able to tolerate. Then the whole China recall thing happened. Every time I opened a can , I would get so anxious about him eating the food. I watched him like a hawk looking for any sign of illness. I called the company for information about the safety of the product and was given reassurance. The line they gave me was that they would feed their cats the product. They told me about the facilities and their standards. I continued to feed him Fromm's.
I then had a difficult time finding the food anywhere. The owner of the pet food store where I would buy it, told me that Fromms was just trying to keep up with the demand. I called Fromms and they told me that they were changing their cans and labels. That the food would be available in a few weeks.
Those weeks turned into longer weeks and once again I called them and the person I spoke to had no idea what I was talking about when I brought up the can and label change. My anxiety level was increasing, but they reassured me that they would feed their cats the food!
China made the news again when 180 food plants were closed. On TV I saw a chicken processing plant and I got queasy. So, I called Fromms and they had no idea about the lastest news to come out of China. The only thing I got out of them was that the chicken they use comes from China, it's not brought in from the US.Oh, and that they'd get back to me. I also asked when the food would available again and was told not until August!
They never called me back so I called them . They reassured me that the food was safe, they do their own inspections, blah, blah, blah. I asked them about the chicken. They said it was safe, never bringing up the lastest China food recall. I brought it up and they told me that they just had a meeting about it that morning. I pressed to find out more about where the chicken comes from. I told them what I saw on TV. All I got was the same old, our food is safe, we inspect and test everything. I asked if the US inspectors are there everyday to oversee everything, I was told they are there monthly. I asked why the food won't be available until August when I was first told it would ready by the end of June, and was given the answer that other flavors are available. They could not give me straight answers about where the chicken comes from, who supplies the tomato paste and the potatoe starch, except to say it's all from China and the same old song and dance.
I feel I was double talked and I am done with them. If I am going to trust my cats life with their product, I need more answers then the script they kept "reading" from. I've happily switched to another brand and have piece of mind.

Didn't have much luck with the canned varieties but have used the grain free  feline Surf & Turf for quite a few months now and am very happy how well both are doing on the food.

Upon visiting Fromm's website today I saw that there are no longer any canned dog or cat foods listed. There is a statement posted saying that they will be introducing there new line of canned foods in fall of 2009 or sooner. It also states that the new canned line of foods will all be made in the USA.

Bonkers:  Thanks for that wonderful info.  I wanted to try Fromm's but I refused to because I heard it was made in Thailand.......that was enough for me!

Looking forward to their new line! Grin

Fromm has canned food again and it is canned in the U.S. not China.  My two  Mastiffs love it as a topping on their Fromm dry food.  I've been feeding Fromm dry for over 2 years and they thrive on it.  Love switching between the different flavors and formulas.  And I'm thrilled that they are still family-owned and manufacture their own dry food.
