Prednisone vs. Prednisolone

If the need arises for steroid therapy I prefer to use prenisolone. The difference between the 2 is that the prednisolone doesn't have to be broken down by the liver so I feel its a better choice and especially a better choice for an animal with impaired liver function.

I agree Grey Ghost. 

I had a kitty who was put on prednisone.......he had cancer.
I did some research and asked for the switch to prednisilone.

My old vet couldn't be bothered with the difference between the 2 and GASP he had to order some for me when I demanded the change for my kitty.

It made a huge difference.  There were no side effects.
The dosage was smaller.

Thats a scary thought that he couldn't be bothered with the difference of the 2. Most vets have prednisolone on hand but its not uncommon for some to have to order it. There are still a few out there that don't get the difference.

Believe it or not I had the same problem with Misty's thyroid meds. No one (4 clinics) had Soloxine. They only had the generic and the human brands. I could not believe it. I had to get it online. Again they didn't bother with the difference. 

Even though being a tech and working in a clinic for a few years I was amazed at how little they know and how uninterested they are in things like this.
