Tainted Pet Food Suit Settled For $24 Million. "Menu Foods, other pet food makers and retailers involved in last year's massive pet food recall will set up a $24 million cash fund to compensate pet owners, according to a proposed settlement filed Thursday in federal court. The fund is expected to compensate thousands of pet owners in the U.S. and Canada who bought recalled pet foods made by Menu and 11 others. The products had a contaminated ingredient from China that sickened dogs and cats."                                            http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/2008-05-22-petfood-lawsuit-settled_N.htm

Such a small victory for all of the pet owners that lost their precious kids and friends.  This is what is still so upsetting from the article posted:
"The FDA never identified how many pets were affected."

If truth be told, this settlement is more like $2 per pet in reality. If the FDA would have stepped up to the plate and investigated then admitted how many pets were lost (not to mention how many are STILL sick and/or going to die), the settlement could have been much greater.

Where's Don Earl from PFPSA been?  I'd like to see him back at the forums here.

Judge Approves $24 Million Settlement In Pet Food Case.                                       "A judge has approved a $24 million settlement for owners of dogs and cats who were sickened or died after eating pet food containing a chemical contaminant.
U.S. District Judge Noel Hillman on Tuesday accepted the deal, calling it "fair, reasonable and adequate."

"The ruling clears the way for U.S. pet owners with claims to start receiving checks next year. A Canadian judge has scheduled a hearing for Nov. 3 to determine whether the settlement can also apply in that nation."

"Under the deal, pet owners have until Nov. 24 to file claims."                                 http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/081014/nj_pet_food_recalls.html?.v=1

This is so bitter sweet. Victory yes but compensation no. There is no way they money can bring the pets back nor the little bit that the pet owners will get will in no way cover veterinary costs.

Maybe this will set the ball rolling for companies to make better food and check their ingredients. This should never had happened and its not unreasonable for pet owners to expect a good quality safe food. As we all know there are way too many recalls on pet and human food as it is. Even now.
