Hello all.  My neighbor's cat (who has chronic poor health due to his barn cat heritage) recently was diagnosed with a urinary tract blockage.  He nearly died and the vet sent the family home with...you guessed it, Science Diet.  The cat didn't like it so I bought the family a bag of dry Wysong Uretic and I spoke with the owners a bit about pet food (there is only so much you can get into with the generally food-clueless population of America).  Now the owners want to know if there are any affordable (key word) wet foods out there that would be acceptable for his condition.

I am not too familiar with FLUT.  I see that Hills Prescription Diet has the following nutrient content:

Calcium: 0.10 min/0.72 dry matter
Phosphorus: 0.10 min/0.68 dry matter
Sodium: 0.12 min/0.32 dry matter
Potassium:   .80% dry matter
Magnesium: 0.020 max /0.013 dry matter
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: 0.10 min/0.96 dry matter

They also say the food includes a boost of B6 and Vit E.

I'm pretty familiar with alternative brands and have not come up with anything with similar content levels.  I really don't want to see the cat (actually all their cats) go back on SD or any other grocery-store brand.  Would a primarily meat-based formula (i.e. Evangers) be a safe substitute if there isn't anything out there?

I have never used the Hill's Prescription Diet, but have used some of their special diets canned, and also Royal Canin special diets.  I think either of these product lines are much better than Science Diet (which I have used in the past).  Sometimes one is forced to use a commercial special diet.  Also, any real meat based canned commercial would be better than Science Diet if it can meet the special diet needs.  I hate to recommend any one type because some pets are just picky and they're all so different, but hope this helps.

Update (long in coming): my neighbor's cats have been using Wysong Uretic and they're thriving!

Oh, that is good to hear! I have to admit, I'm really partial to the Wysong line of foods for pets.
