I just talked with Jennfer Freeman at Natural Balance, who informed me that their website has just been updated with new info. She said they don't know what the problem is yet, but as a precaution, they are telling people not to feed the Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Foods.

She said they have not had any new complaints - the number stands at about 7 complaints.

From the their website:

NOTICE:
We are receiving consumer complaints regarding the Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Foods. We do not know what is wrong with the food at this time, but we have heard that animals are vomiting and experiencing kidney problems. Please discontinue feeding all Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat Food.

We are working closely with the FDA.
We will update this website today, as more information comes available.

The flavor of the Solid Gold sample I have that lists Garlic is Katz N-Flocken Dry.
That is the flavor that made my cat sick.

Mine is the Solid Gold Katz-N-Flocken Dry as well.

I checked the bag very carefully, and there's no mention of garlic anywhere on it.  Like I said, it may be something that they have removed from their formula.

Sorry to hear it made your cat sick.  I do know several people whose cats are thriving on it (which is why I'll be trying it as a potential food in North America.)

Solid Gold is not made by Diamond- this is a piece of mis-information that has been making its way around. Solid Gold has their own plant where they make their foods.
Note if you look under Diamond pet food, Solid Gold is not listed, nor was it involved in their recall years ago. If you do some research into the companies/plants, they are not located in the same place.

It may not be a Diamond owned brand. That does not mean it is not made by Diamond, which contract manufactures dry food for a lot of other pet food brands.

Therese's Pet Food List specifically states that Solid Gold Dry is made by Diamond as verified by the company.

In all my years and dealings with Solid Gold, nobody has ever stated the food was made by diamond, or associated with Diamond. Either way, I have had a great deal of success with the food and I still feel it is one of the higher quality, safer foods out there.

I've sent an email to the person I spoke with before at Solid Gold, asking for confirmation of who makes their dry food. For now I've put a notation on the list that says we're waiting for verification.

Therese, my 2 cents is........ a lot of folks on the web seem to be using your list as one of their main resources. If S.G. did tell you that Diamond manufactured their dry food, my suggestion would be to leave that information up, with a note that a forum member questioned the validity of that statement & that you have asked Solid Gold to confirm a second time.

Just my 2 cents worth, but it may save a life.............

I spoke with Joey Herrick (pres. of NB) again this morning.  To his credit, he has been very compassionate and responsive.  I am sure he is feeding his animals the food too!  Natural Balance will also be picking up our ever mounting vet bills...as well they should.

Please don't get me wrong, I am not defending NB in any way.  What has happened is inexcusable.  But they have responed to me personally in an appropriate manner.  I hope they continue to respond to pet owners this way.

JC,
First, my condolences on your loss. I can't imagine your pain having to endure this.

Melamine? That is incredible. I'm sure they didn't give any possible answers as to how it got in there, considering they don't use any wheat. If it is cross-contamination, I'm glad I by-passed all Diamond food out of that exact fear and went to Canidae. Unfortunately, one dog doesn't seem to like the Canidae anymore and another dog has vomited twice now, so the hunt for the perfect food continues.
