I know this is an outdated post but an important one so i will answer.

Most heartworm for dogs is given monthly. First you have to have a heartworm test and make sure the dog is negative. Then the tablet is given monthly preferably on the same day each month. Mine come with monthly stickers for my calendar. I use them and they really help. Most vet clinics will want to do a yearly test before prescriptions refills. Some will go 2 years but only if you have not missed any months of dosing. This is very important. If you miss a month or 2 its best to have the test again to make sure they are heartworm neg before resuming the monthly dosing schedule.

I use Interceptor. I feel its the best available and it also kills more worms than the other brands.
