When an issue so critical to the government gets through the censored domestic news in China, the discontent is *huge* and growing.

Nothing "got through". The Chinese government wants this news to reach the outside world. They tried the old communist dictatorship method of denial. But, they realized nobody was buying it. (I wonder when North Korea will realize it, as well.) So, they switched to "concern-mode", assuring all of the possible attendees to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing that the food, water, and medicine is safe.

So.. "Come on down and spend your money in extremely safe China, where your safety is our number one concern!"
