My friend's 95 lb. dog gets chronic ear infections, and I've been trying to convince him to switch foods. Right now the dog eats Purina Dog Chow. Money is a little tight for them lately, so I've been trying to find a relatively inexpensive food with zero wheat or corn to suggest he try. But I'm having a hard time finding anything, because the meat (chicken/lamb) and rice recipes for the common brands still have corn gluten in them?!

Only thing I found so far is Nutro Lamb & Rice. Anyone know of any others?

Thanks in advance.

Old thread, but since 2007 most but not all companies have discontinued using glutens in their pet foods.

I believe the consensus these days is to use a food that is grain free for dogs who get persistant yeast infections. If I am not mistaken it is also wise to avoid any foods that contain potatoes although I believe sweet potatoes may be ok.

Adding digestive enzymes to the food along with some type of essential fatty acids can also be of help for these conditions.

Finally, a subject I know a little about.......rah rah...... Tongue

Hannah gets yeast infections on a regular basis.  First it was a rash on her belly & now it's primarily in her ears.

The foods to avoid are:  carrots, peas, cottage cheese, taters & sweet taters.  Here's a link to everything you ever needed to know about yeast:

http://www.nzymes.com/pc/viewContent.asp?idpage=16

And you are so right about a grain-free food.

I have used their yeast kit more than once & continue to use some of their products now.  Always worked well for Miss Hannah.

I also think once a dog has a problem w/yeast, it's an ongoing problem. Angry

 Hannie,

Am I correct in thinking that probiotics are also recommended for yeast infections?

Hannie,

Kathy is 100% right (we compare notes as both our dogs are prone to yeast infections)!

I not only give probiotics but also plain yogurt.......also give her Nzymes antioxidants for one meal & probiotics for the other.  This summer has been wicked humid which is unusual for this area.  I'm also giving her a dry w/a few grains so that may also have something to do with the latest round of red, yeasty ears.  I'm going back to Instinct.......does have tapioca but probably not much.  Not a lot to choose from out there these days.........as we all know...... Angry

Ah, to have a dog w/o yeast problems, allergies & skin issues!!!!!!!
