I AM A  NEWBIE ON THIS SITE. MY CAT IS  OVERWEIGHT @ 17 LB. HE HAS BEEN EATING FANCY FEAST GRILLED SALMON FEAST. MY VET PUT HIM ON A DIET OF HILLS W/D. HE HATES IT AND I HAVE TO ADD FANCY FEAST FOR FLAVOR.  I HAVE SPENT HOURS ON THIS SITE AND IF I HAVE LEARNED ANYTHING IT IS THE HILLS IS OVERRATED AND NOT EVEN PARTICULARLY GOOD FOR MY BEST FRIEND. NOW I AM ASKING THE GOOD PEOPLE THAT VISIT THIS SITE AND LOVE THEIR PETS AS I DO, TO HELP ME OUT WITH FINDING THE RIGHT FOOD.  SEBASTIAN WAS ADOPTED FROM THE POUND AT AGE 3. HE IS NOW 8.
HE PREFERS TO EAT  WET FOOD. THE VET SUGGESTED HE CONSUME ABOUT 278 CALORIES PER DAY. IN ADDITION, IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A LOW CAL TREAT, THAT WOULD HELP ME TOO. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING THIS POST AND ATTEMPTING TO HELP ME BELOVED CAT.

Hi Grandma! Wet cat food is always best to feed. I would suggest trying the Wellness grain free canned. If you have trouble getting your cat to eat another brand of cat food you could always mix a little of the FF in with it and decrease the amount of FF over time till the cat is totally on the new food. Grain free IMO would be ideal for helping a cat loose weight.

I agree. Grain free is the way to go. It does have more calories so you have make sure not to over feed.

Getting an obese cat to lose weight needs to be done gradually… no crash diets allowed!  Cats have a unique metabolic response to fasting and whenever a feline’s food intake is rapidly and markedly depressed, a serious and potentially fatal disorder can occur called Hepatic Lipidosis.

I have a dog. She was overweight and I tried everything. For her and a friends cat the raw food diet made the biggest change in weight.
