I wrote the company about the menadione and got the exact same email message in return.  If they can't answer my questions, then I figure I don't need to make that phone call to have them try and rationalize why they use toxic ingredients.  Easy decision for me ~ no go!

Through Google, I did find 1 page on their site where Purina is mentioned:
http://www.petpromiseinc.com/news_page/new2.htm

"Nestlé Purina PetCare will provide the necessary production resources and manufacturing needed to maintain the Pet Promise purity guarantees. Additionally, New Chapter Inc., a leading vitamin and supplement manufacturer in the natural channel, has developed probiotic supplements that will be part of the Pet Promise product line."

Not sure if this means they're owned by Purina, or use them like others use Diamond/Menu etc.

If you read the text carefully, the text says that the manufacturing facilities are used but it does not imply that the Purina contents are used. They JUST have them canning the Pet Promise product. I have been using it for over a year and it is a very good food and I have 11 cats.

Do not fear Pet Promise food in fact it was one of the two food I know of that were still safe during the Menu foods debacle.
Taurine is beneficial to cats. The Corn Glutin Meal  is not what I like to see due to recent events but the source of this substance must be evaluated. This stuff does NOT come from China and that should take care of it.
Like most things from China, they produce substandard products- tires, foods, toys and this will continue to happen as long as people support this type of manufacturing. They probably could get better results from Chimps or Orangutans.

My kitties did not do well on the Pet Promise dry food. Too grainy IMO. I have used the Pet Promise canned food (chicken formula only) for over a year now and my they seem to be doing very well on it.

I saw an add for them on yahoo this morning...so I went to the site....after going through it...I had some questions. Here they are....plus some comments.

---------------- begin letter to Pet Promise ----------------------

I really find your website and product information misleading. You make "chicken" sound so much better by playing on the emotions of consumers of what we would want to eat (by looks). We all know chicken is mostly water and when cooked there is very little of it left. So 1st ingredient myths abound. And we know that chicken meal has been scientifically proven to be very bio-available to dogs, second only  to the bio-availability of meat meals. Do you have a new study that shows Chicken over Chicken meal is more bio-available. If so - this would be great to know! Since you know all your sustainable farms, will you list them on your website? Which supplier do you use? That is the big deciding factor for me. There are only a few suppliers to pet food plants in this country. Do you have your own plant? or do you source to a plant that makes other dog foods? Do you test your food for toxins? If so, will you post the results on line so we know your food is safe and not just pretty? Is your pre-mixes / vitamins CERTIFIED not to come from china? What is the education/experience of your nutritionist that devoloped your food? Thank you for your time. After the food recalls of 2007 I have learned not to rely on ads to lead me down a decision tree, but instead to ask questions that any company should be able to answer.

Kind Regards,
Robert Davis

Food for thought.....Heres a very interesting and factual note from a vet with a PhD in nutrition

Taking a sample of equal weight, there is a dramatic difference between the protein content of a “meal” and “fresh chicken”.  Meal is mere 10% water – therefore, 90% of the actual weight is meat protein.  Fresh chicken is 70% water – therefore, only 30% of the actual weight is meat protein.  Meals contain almost 3 times more protein on a weight per weight basis compared to fresh meat.  So if a company claims 70% meat using fresh chicken as the basis it  is not wrong claiming 70% meat, but one must take into account that of that 70%, perhaps 30% is just water, not protein.

Very misleading. So the ones that have all the fresh meat and whole chicken and all that are actually giving you less protein by meat. That means the protein is coming from something else. I don't like that idea.

I was told by a lady in Pet Promise's customer department that the company is in the process of going out of business. I was also told that their products should be available untill around the end of this year. If anyone has any questions you can contact them directly via their customer service.
