I received a coupon for their food after I asked for samples due to this recall mess. I wondered if anyone had used it? I keep trying to be on top of it all, and it's just overwhelming to keep up with it all. Huh

I just looked at their web site http://www.petpromiseinc.com/products_cat.htm
& this looks promising except for one thing: On the main Pet Food List Therese lists them as "A Purina Product". I can't find that info on their site. Therese, do you remember the source of that info?

I don't trust Purina, & if there is an affiliation, I don't like that they're hiding it.  They do appear to mostly market to mainstream grocery stores & pet stores (Kroger, Petco, etc).

The only ingredient I see of potential concern is taurine, I have no knowledge on that but I've seen others post concerns about it.

I would also be interested if other members who have more knowledge then I regarding what percentages of what is healthy could take a look at this.

Through Google, I did find 1 page on their site where Purina is mentioned:
http://www.petpromiseinc.com/news_page/new2.htm

"Nestlé Purina PetCare will provide the necessary production resources and manufacturing needed to maintain the Pet Promise purity guarantees. Additionally, New Chapter Inc., a leading vitamin and supplement manufacturer in the natural channel, has developed probiotic supplements that will be part of the Pet Promise product line."

Not sure if this means they're owned by Purina, or use them like others use Diamond/Menu etc.

There have been no replies, but just in case anyone is actually reading this,

I've been doing some research on Pet Promise as someone on another board suggested it as an option for my hyper allergenic cat.

2 problems:
1. Purina
2. They use Menadione in the dry cat food which is so toxic it's actually been banned by the FDA (& as we all know it's really hard to get banned by the FDA!)

A local pet store stopped selling their food because they wouldn't answer questions about where it was made.  Seeing it is Purina  - I think that makes sense now!

I emailed them yesterday asking them to explain just what their affiliation with Purina is.

Here's what they wrote back:

"Thank you for contacting Pet Promise.

Please know that your comments are important to us, and as such, we would like to be able to discuss this matter more completely with you.  Please contact our Office of Consumer Affairs directly at 1-800-416-4700 weekdays between 6AM to 6PM MST. One of our Pet Advisors will be more than happy to speak with you regarding your inquiry.  Please provide the Pet Advisor with the reference number that appears below.  Or, if you prefer, please e-mail us back with your phone number and we'll be back in touch with you as soon as possible.

We look forward to hearing from you.

P.S.  We appreciate your interest in our products and would like to offer you one of our Pet Promise Gift Packs for your pet to enjoy.  Simply email us back your complete mailing information and let us know if you would like to receive a dog, cat, or dog and cat pack.  We look forward to hearing from you!"

Hmmm........... am I being paranoid or are they hesitant to put anything of substance in writing?

There website is made to look like a small organic family business. The more I read about these folks, the more wary I get. I'm about 75% sure that they ARE Purina.

This is my last post on this (I promise!)

Today I was in a Kroger subsidiary (Fred Meyer) & decided to take a look at a bag of Pet Promise. "Purina" was NOWHERE on the label. Unfortunately, Menadione was.

I do not trust this company. Cover ups do not sit well with me. If they were open about their relationship with Purina, I MIGHT have actually tried it.........

And the stupid 'form letters' they send you when you have an inquiry.  That always really ticks me off.  Can't they even at least mention what you emailed them about? I figure if the local store isn't comfortable with them, neither am I.

Jenny, the reason I didn't post my original email to them is because the only way to contact them is through their web form, not by direct email. That also ties into what i said above that they appear to not want to have any public written records of anything.

Geff, you could have copied and pasted what you wrote to them into notepad, and then pasted it here.  That is always an option for those online contact pages.  That way you will have a record of what you asked them.

Obviously the fact that this food does not have fish is the positive factor for you.  However, in addition to the other things you mentioned that were of concern, I would have a big concern over the following ingredients:  corn gluten meal, soy flour, soy protein isolate.  Those would be enough to cause me to rule out the food entirely, but that's just me. :They scream China, vegetable protein sources, etc.  Blah.  I'd stick with  Cal Nat before I'd feed this.  If the concern about Cal Nat is the fact the one person's tests found trace amounts of toxins, then there is no reason to believe it would not be in a food like this too.  I think you have to consider whether you are really avoiding something in changing, or if you are instead possibly risking  even more.

Geff, since we are now taking about Cal Nat. I have started a new topic and moved my response to here:
http://thepetfoodlist.com/forums/index.php?topic=576.0

Maybe you can delete your post and move your response to that thread.  That way it will be accessible for those looking for Cal Nat info.

Done. I was thinking about that earlier when we were discussing this on the Wellness thread also.

Geff, have you thought about maybe calling Pet Promise and see what they have to say?  Maybe you could find out more about their ingredients, sourcing, etc.  The veggie proteins are a bit scary, but maybe you could get some satisfactory answers.  It really seems that you have very few options.  It can't hurt to call them.

It might be interesting (though I expect a big corporate brush off), but the Menadione is a poison & kills the product for me..

The other thing I was reminded of regarding all the PFC's is our discovery a few months back that the law only requires their labeling to be accurate 6 months a year (please don't ask me to point to the original post on that!! It could be here, in our blogs, or somewhere on Itchmo; but i remember it was verified back in April or May).
