Does anyone know animal toothpaste with reasonable ingredients? Stefie will need his teeth cleaned this year (funny, his sister is fine, they eat the same food) so I'd like to try brushing his teeth to try to make sure he won;t need it again. General anesthetic for teeth cleaning terrifies me.

Stefie cooperates with a toothbrush, he actually seems to like it, but that is with no toothpaste. I haven;'t yet found one he would tolerate and I would feel comfortable with using for a long time. Why should there be any BHA in toothpaste?

I've been using C.E.T. Enzymatic Toothpaste (Tartar Control)  It's made by Virbac.

Active Ingredients: Glucose Oxidase, Lactoperoxidase.  Also contains Sorbitol USP/NF, Purified Water USP, Hydrated Silica, Glycerine, Dextrose, Xanthan Gum, Flavor, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Thiocyanate.

I don't know if those are good ingredients or not!

I've been brushing Andy's teeth and they look great.

Hi, I wish you guys would come and brush my kitties teeth! Also, did you know some vets will attempt teeth cleaning without giving anesthesia? I had it done once with a gentle-mannered cat; it wasn't deep-cleaning, just what could be scraped off with her mouth held open. She tolerated it very well, and it doesn't hurt to ask your vet!

We've tried that last year, but his back teeth are yellow again this year and the vet thinks proper cleaning needs to be done. I'd rather do it now when he is 7 than postpone it again for a year or two and do it when he is older.

I am still worried about it, and determined to find a suitable toothpaste so that it doesn't need to be done again. I would appreciate more recommendations.

Himimom1254, thanks for the info.

My dog loves for me to brush her teeth, she will not leave the bathroom when she sees me brushing my own teeth.  She will wait until I come back and brush hers too.  I was using dog toothpaste I think it was one from C.E.T.  I didn't like all of the chemicals I saw when I actually payed attention to the ingredients about 2-3 months ago.  Since then I have been using a drop or 2 of GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) by nutribiotic...  I put a drop or 2 on the toothbrush and dip it in a dixie cup of water.  She didn't love the flavor at first (It DOES taste yucky) but now she likes it ok!!  I drink it on occasion when I am sick or I will also put it on my toothbrush alongside toothpaste)  I like it because it kills bacteria and viruses.  I don't know if your kitty will like the taste, but I feel better about it as is is ok to injest (DILUTED of course) instead of injesting the chemicals in the toothpaste.  If anyone finds a more natural type of toothpaste please post, that would be great!!
(A word of caution, you must dilute it with water!!!)

Has anyone tried C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Chews for Cats?

Dental treats are usually garbage, but this actually looks good:

Ingredients: Freeze-dried fish, antioxidant (containing tocopherols, ascorbic acid, natural flavor, and citric acid), dextrose, glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidase.

What do you guys think?

I am still trying to find a good toothpaste, but even when I do find one, I don;t think Stefie will cooperate with brushing every day, my objective is to get it done 1-2 times a week.

I've used the C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Chews for cats in the past.  They were not a big hit at my house since they are fish ( I have the only cat in the world that does not like fish).  I would have to cut them in thirds because they were so big so I think I was defeating the purpose of the chewing required.

They are worth a try if your kitty likes fish.  My vet loves them and gives them out as treats in the office.
