Apparently the problem of lead tainted candy is still not solved. I don't know about the rest of you, but my lack of comfort with the FDA and government agencies designed to protect our food supply is at an all time low. Regarding the way in which these issues are handled and the reasons why, I found some of the specifics in these articles very disturbing. Just read.

But lead levels found in candy are not borderline, the Register found.

More than 80 percent of the state and federal high test results show levels so dangerous that eating one piece could push a child past the FDA's recommended daily limit for lead.

Since my son started eating solid foods, I've started buying more and more organic foods for our family, including milk and meats.  It truly is scary when you start reading about how much pesticide is on fruits and veggies (and by consequence, would be in any processed foods made with them).  I think the best we can do is try to minimize our exposures wherever possible, but I now believe there is lots of stuff we don't know about in the foods we eat.  Not much we can do about it unless we go live in a commune and grow our own food.

Now there is a concept I like! The hippies had it right (well, some of it!) way back in the 60's and 70's! This idea is currently pretty much dismissed as anarchism. But I see the day when such a lifestyle may truly be a healthy alternative for survival. I personally got to know a group of folks who had developed a middle-class living center in the Midwest US during that same era, complete with farming. Most all of them lived to be very active 80-90 years old. It was truly amazing. Pretty hard to do it on your own, but not so hard with like-minded people helping one another out.
