Can anyone tell me what is normal litter box behavior?

How often do most cats urinate (pee) in a day?

And how often will cats on a super premium food poop?

Thanks!

Good question.  I can only tell you about my cat and I have no idea what is considered normal.  He poops about once a day, as did my past cat. As for pee, he doesn't really seem to go that often, maybe 3 times a day or so, even though he drinks plenty of water.  But good grief, to me the most odd behavior is that he obsesses and fusses over the result of his visit forever.  He won't get out until he thinks he has done a thorough job of organizing things...pretty comical.

Wish I could be of more help.  I'm sure others will chime in.

Davis,
Thanks! One of our five cats, Dallas, is totally obsessive about his time in the litter box. We have covered boxes (our cats seem to like the extra privacy), and he even scrapes at the walls and ceiling when's 'done', just to make sure everything is properly covered.

LOL...yes, scraping at the walls (I have a covered box too), and with mine, even the floor outside the box!...sounds like our cats are twins!

Y'all will think I am obsessing on this one. I separated my cats (the one eating the dry food has her own living quarters (it is actually a palace!) and the other 2 use the same litterbox. So now I can keep track of the one eating dry-I feel she is at worse risk of getting renal failure. I mark down the urine clumps when cleaning out the litterbox. They are all currently averaging 3 urinations per day. It does vary slightly day to day. I am watching to make sure it doesn't greatly increase or decrease, indicating trouble. Hope that gives you an idea, Eternaljester81!

One of my cats goes 3 times a day, others two times a day. She started going 3 times a day recently, but her urine is fine so vet thinks there is no reason to worry about it, could be just my change of schedule. I monitored her at first using urine dipsticks for pH, protein, glucose etc. She didn't appreciate it Smiley There was occasionally mild positive (common problem with dipsticks and cats) so we did full urine test and everything came back fine. Except that now probably both my vet and Mitzie think I am really paranoid. Good thing my older two are toilet trained, and Sophie is almost fully toilet trained (on green ring of litter kwitter) so getting the samples is quite easy. For No. 2 they go once a day.

Btw, since this whole mess started, I started a "logbook". Basically a notebook with dates, where I just write down what I fed and when, and who went to the toilet and when. Helps to keep track of things.

So the norm here seems to be 2-3 times a day for urination, and once a day for #2.

Mary, I actually think your "potty" procedure is a really good idea.  We can never be too careful with our cats.

Quadruplets. Bothe of mine do it as well.. One also scratches the wall next to the litter box.  Roll Eyes

The things we do for love! And here is a funny for your day. I always "shake" the box after cleaning it, to redistribute the litter evenly. The male, waiting patiently,  then jumps in and likes to be in the box while it is being shaken, (for the ride)! I start laughing uncontrollably, then the female runs and jumps on my back and starts howling, as though she thinks I am torturing the male. What a side-show!  Litter cleaning isn't supposed to be this much fun  Roll Eyes

My Sphynx urinates about 3-4 times a day, and defecates about twice a day.  Sphynx do have faster metabolisms than other cats (it helps to keep them warm since they have no fur) so I'm not surprised he goes more often than other cats.  He seems to be pretty typical of other Sphynx.

The one downside of the fast Sphynx metabolism is that they stink when they defecate.  Uggh.  Tongue

However, like some of your cats, he digs and digs and digs in the litterbox!  Quite comical really, how much he digs!

With the way some cats dig, you'd think they were trying to uncover some treasures, not just bury the stinkies. One of our cats will go in the litter box after the others and bury what the other just did. I guess he just likes things good and sanitary.
