Just wanted to say that we've been very happy with the Evangers Hunk of Beef for dogs.  I don't believe it's meant to be used as a complete meal, so we use it as a special treat and mix it in with our dog's dry food occasionally - if we could afford to, we would do it everytime.

Quite simply, it is a hunk of beef.  The ingredient list reads:  "100% whole beef cooked in its own juices".  They actually have a label that says "Not for human consumption", which makes me think my husband is not the only who's stared longingly at Symba's dinner Smiley   I should add that Symba loves it too..but then again, he loves just about anything!

Given the quality of this product, I am encouraged to try their other lines.  Also, I'm pleased that Evangers is on PETA's 'do not test on animals' list.

Using Evangers Classic Chicken and Rice canned dog food.  Both my girls are very happy with it.  No problems switching them from Nutro Max Chicken Rice and Lamb.  I recommend this as a good basic food-I'm happy with Evangers.  I order from them on line.

I've been using Evanger's canned dog food for a little over a year now.  I mostly add a couple tablespoons to my dogs' kibble for flavor & gravy.  I also keep it on hand for when is off their food or has a queasy stomach.  I have never once seen either of my dogs have a problem eating their food.  A friend turned me onto it saying it was kosher, meat, water & that's it.  Although some of their canned food does contain more ingredients, I stick with the simple ingredients ones.  My dogs both love it and scarf it up as soon as I set their bowls in front of their eager faces.

I pray it remains one of the safe foods.

We have switched to Evangers and our Teddy loves it. They are very easy to contact and forthcoming with information about their pet food production.

Caution about using PETA's list as a guide. I know that Newman's Own is on that list, yet they use Menu Foods to produce some of their foods (none recalled). I called PETA to see how that could be & they say since Menu doesn't do testing for them, they can be on their list (as is the case with some others)....I feel that if any company is contracting with Menu, they are supporting Menu's operations, including the animal testing division.

We dicided to go with Evangers because they produce their own line , do not contract out, and use local suppliers.

My three dogs have been getting Evangers canned along with their Canidae dry now for about a week. I have a case of the duck & sweet potato and a case of the beef with beef chunks. They really love it. The beef formula really smells like roast beef. So far I'm really happy with their food, and so are the dogs who drool like crazy when I open the can. I paid $1.29 and $1.39 a can for it, which isn't really any different than the Wellness they used to get. I'm looking forward to trying some other flavors too (for the dogs, I'm not eating them, but I bet I could).

I recently bought 2 cans of Evangers Duck & Sweet Potato for my dog to try.  I was surprised to see peas in the can -- peas are not listed on the label.  I emailed Evangers to ask about the discrepancy.

My email (this is the 2nd of two I sent):
Hi,
I sent an email a few days ago with a question about your Duck & Sweet
Potato entree.  I know you must be inundated right now with questions about
the pet food recall!  Sorry to be asking again after only a few days, but I
am anxious about it -- also I want to decide if I should stock up on
Evangers, or try another brand.
A recap of my earlier email:
I have some fear about your labeling because the 2 cans of Duck & Sweet
Potato I bought for my dog to try had peas in it, but the label does not say
anything about peas.  I'm not worried about the peas -- just worried in
general that there are things in the can that aren't listed on the lable.
I'm hoping you can clarify the discrepancy and dispell my fears.
Sincere thanks

The response:
I apologize for the delay in answering your email.  I have forwarded your
email to our quality control department so that they can determine what
happened.

Duck & Sweet Potato does not usually have peas in it, but it appears that a
few peas from another variety may have missed being cleaned out of the
system when the equipment was washed down between batches.  This is an
unusual occurrence since we wash down the equipment thoroughly in order to
prevent ingredients from one batch getting into another.

Evanger's has never been involved in a recall since our company was founded
in 1935 and we are committed to maintaining the highest standard of quality
to ensure that that record remains unbroken.  If you will let me know your
address, I will be happy to send you 2 replacement cans of Duck & Sweet
Potato at no charge.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may
have.

I bought 6 more cans to give it another try.  I opened a can this morning and it has peas in it too.  I'm going to return them.  I emailed Evangers back with the info from the bottom of the cans: "1470E113 ED 12 Best by Feb 2012".  I'm hoping this is just an ill-timed incident.  The brand seems to be high-quality and trustworthy.  I may try them again at some point, but I'm kind of spooked about it now.  I'll post a follow-up with any more information I get from them.

Hi Athena,

I just wanted to let you know that I bought a couple of cases of the Duck/sw pot. right after the first recall, and to date there has been no inconsistencies with it. I believe what they told you about the cross-transference is probably just that.

Out of all the food I've tried after the first recall...Evangers is the only one I've had no worries about.

My dog also loves the hunk of beef which I do mix in with her dry a couple times a week. I try to mix some Evangers with the Karma dry. While on these two foods my dogs fur has thickened. Had been using Nutro Wholistic with Merrick's canned. Switched to Karma last Sept. with still using Merrick. My dog still was eating grass to make herself throw up so she knew something was not right or didnt' agree with her in the Merrick's canned so stopped using that and now only strictly use Evangers. Guess what? No more grass eating and throwing up. Glad Evangers has what is says it has on the can.
