Diedtra Henderson, Boston Globe Staff

April 21, 2007 - The Blue Buffalo Co. of Wilton, Conn., stunned to
learn that its pet food contained the tainted rice protein concentrate,
now will demand that, if its American suppliers must use imports, they
will choose trusted countries like Australia , Canada , New Zealand,
and the European Union nations, which have more rigorous standards.

"It's when you get into some of these Asian countries, particularly
China, where the regulation just isn't there," said Bill Bishop , the
company's president. "We can't tolerate that as a pet food supplier.
We're clearly going to bar China."

To Mr. Bill Bishop...and OTHER Pet food co. Presidents!

If you are aware of how loose the Asian country's regulations are.....then why deal with them in the FIRST place....insteatd of "after the fact", when so many have suffered because of your absolute negligence!

I hate these companies who, stay silent while pets are eating their "possibly" contaminated food products and dying......and then after they've been caught....try to look like "boy scouts", saying they are going to bar China!!! Come on!!!...they are the ones saving all that money by using loosely regulated Asian ingredients in their products....who does he think he's kidding?

Cindy:......I have to agree with you on your last post....though will genuinely commit to it!!

After all...as they say,..."It's easy to talk the talk....but can you walk the walk?"

Blue Buff did NOT import from China.

BB bought glutens from USA's ChemNutra

ChemNutra is and importer, BB is not.

It doesn't help the situation when so much misinformation is spread.  First of all, Blue doesn't even use gluten in any of their food.  They are wheat, corn and soy free.  The only grain they use is full grain brown rice.

As for rice protein, they received one small shipment from Wilbur Ellis, which is consistent with what WE stated.  This small shipment was used in one specific run for kitten food only.  At least half of this run never even made it into stores and the rest is being pulled back.

As for them purchasing from China, they did not and being a small business, they are not happy that one of their products was sourced from China when they are proud of the fact that their ingredients are from the US.  Unfortunately, their manufacturer uses suppliers who have suppliers who shop around for commodities as they are available, and unfortunately they sourced this stuff from China.  Their supplier received a certificate certifiying that it was from the US, so unfortunately they were lied to as well and are trying to correct the situation.

Unlike IAMS, Purina, etc. they cannot afford to have recalls or to lose customers so they take this more seriously than larger companies.  Call them and talk with them for a few minutes, and they will talk with you about anything, and you will realize what I am talking about.  Not every pet food company is evil - unfortunately some of them were misled.   But at least they are taking immediate steps to correct the situation and look to the future.
