You may have read my posts elsewhere about trying to find a new food for my very Allergic cat. Today I took my requirement list into Mud Bay, a highly regarded local Pet Food Chain.

The one food they could find that met our requirements was one flavor of Evangers; Except that it has Menadione which has been banned by the FDA. (See here) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menadione

The store called Evangers while I was there. I was told that the Evangers employee took my concerns seriously, read the link above & was going to research it & call me back. That's already better then what we've seen from Natura (his current brand).

I'm looking for educated opinions of both the safety & quality of Evangers & of Menadione.

With his allergies (Seafood & at least some of the fruits/veggies/herbs) in many of the foods, our options are very limited.

One other point of interest:

Menadione was definitely listed as an ingredient on the can we checked at Mud bay (I don't remember the flavor). However, I don't see it listed in the ingredients list for any of the Poultry cat canned foods on their web site.

I believe that they took out the Menadione a while back, but are using old labels. I think if you call they will fax you a letter to confirm that. My only problem with Evangers is that I found bone in a lot of my cans of Organic Turkey and Squash. You have to mash up the food to find them. My cats liked it so much that i would go through and pick out the bones. Well one time i was feeding it, and thought I got all the bones, my cat Frank started choking on it! On a positive note, the company itself is great. I called and told them my problem, they were honest and told me what they think had happened, and sent me a whole new case for free!! Now my only problem is that frank wont eat it anymore!

I have still not received a call from Evangers on the Menadione issue. I also haven't heard back from Steve at Mud Bay. Last week, I left him a phone message that Evangers had not called me.

FYI: Evanger's never called me back. On my 3rd attempt, one of the owner's of the Mud Bay Pet Food Chain did call me back. He left me a voice mail, which stated basically the same that Evanger's has been telling others:

According to "Tom", Evanger's states they stopped using Menadione in 8/06, & any food with a pull date after 8/11 will not have it. The person from Mud Bay did say that he has this in writing from Evangers, & has faxed it to my local store for me to read.

The Mud Bay person seemed to believe this is true. I have also read this explanation on Itchmo.

Ya know, it probably is the truth, but I'd still feel a whole lot better if they weren't using labels showing Menadione..............
