Parvo info?

My neighbor took in a pregnant chihauhua that she found on the street, and a week later she had her puppies (4 of them).  One puppy was placed in a home, and the remaining  3 puppies were placed with a rescue at 8 weeks.

The rescue has now diagnosed the 3 puppies with parvo (1 died) and returned the remaining 2 to my neighbor to foster.  (The puppy that was placed directly in a home is apparently fine.)

I know nothing about parvo and what I'm finding on the web are a bit scary. What can I tell my neighbor? She has two other dogs in addition to the puppies mother. The puppies are in her bathroom and she has instructions to wash her hands with a bleach mixture whenever she handles them ... is there anything else?

Hi,

What you are finding on the web is all scary and correct. Do not believe the websites that say they have a cure or natural treatment. There really is no treatment except for the virus to run its course. Treatment is all supportive care to keep the animal hydrated and alive. Keep them separated and yes always wash everything with bleach solution. Where disposable gloves and put feet disposables on also that cover the shoes. never let them in the yard or anywhere else in the house. parvovirus can live months outside in the yard. The older dogs should be ok if vaccinated but I myself would not take any chances. It spreads easily and fast.

The pups probably got it from the shelter which is why I can't understand why they sent them back to your friend. If the puppy that was given away is fine then they got it at the shelter. Not uncommon.

What a devastating course this disease takes. Both puppies passed on. Awful, awful to feel so helpless.
