16  Dry and Wet Foods / Nutro / Re: Excessive Levels Of Zinc Still Being Found In Nutro on: March 29, 2010, 05:16:51 PM

nomoreNutro

Welcome to the Pet Food List Forum!

I am so very sorry to hear about what you and your cats have been through. It sickens me that after all this time these problems with Nutro are still causing health problems in numerous pets. It also sickens me that many of the Big Box stores continually promote this crappy food as a premium product.

There are now 152  pages of complaints filed at Consumer Affairs regarding Nutro.

I hope you will keep us updated as to how your kitties are doing and let us know the results once your new test results come back. You also might want to consider contacting the FDA regarding this.

Well if Evangers ends up going out of business I suppose they will have no choice but to look for another facility.

Just wish I was able to find out who else they do canning for.....

Thanks for the heads up lesliek. That surprises me about Weruva as I thought all their foods were produced overseas. But I suppose after all this time nothing should come as a surprise.

I would be willing to bet that their are a few more companies that Evangers does the canning for. Undecided

I found these on another thread:

Felidae & Canidae (per The Pet Food List they use Evangers and Simmons)
Artemis
Blackwood cat & dog food

Correction to prior post:

By Nature Organics is no longer being canned by Evangers.

Bonkers & Perseus:

My thoughts exactly:  this sort of makes you question all of their ethics, doesn't it?  I stopped using their food the minute there was a question about cooking the food in the can properly.

I sure wish I knew who else they can for because I don't want to use those foods either.  I wonder if they'll shut them down.

I had to post this because this one just blew me away. Shocked

Hannie

I do remember that Evangers did the canning for both the Felidae (cat) and Canidae (dog) foods.  I also believe they do the canning for ByNature.

If anyone should know of any other pet foods that are canned by Evangers, please post them.

It seems that the Sher's are also being accused of money laundering.

"A north suburban couple who own a high-end pet food company were charged Wednesday with stealing nearly $2 million worth of gas and electricity to operate the company and its manufacturing plant.

Joel Sher, 54, and his wife Holly Sher, 52, of Lincolnwood, are charged with felony theft and money laundering for allegedly providing free utilities to their company, Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food, according to a release from the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

State’s attorney's office investigators seized $2.3 million from a Chicago bank account belonging to the Shers as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation, the release said."

22  Dry and Wet Foods / Nutro / Excessive Levels Of Zinc Still Being Found In Nutro on: March 25, 2010, 09:38:18 PM

"March 22, 2010: Test results are back on samples believed to be "Nutro Natural Choice Chicken Meal and Rice" cat food, and "ProPlan Beef & Barley" and "Orscheln's Oatmeal for Seniors" dog foods.

It is the view of pfpsa.org that Nutro is the most dangerous and poorly formulated pet food on the market today. Zinc was detected at levels 9 times that recommended by the National Research Council. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus isn't even close. Calcium came in at 32,000 parts per million and phosphorus at 21,000 ppm. Various sources give slightly different figures for the correct calcium to phosphorus ratio, but they are all close to 8-9 parts phosphorus for every 10 parts calcium. In addition to calcium levels being 15 times higher than needed for good health, the ratio is 6.5 parts phosphorus to 10 parts calcium.

The cat affected is about one year old, was kept indoors only, and had been eating Nutro for about five days. Blood and urine tests indicated liver and possibly kidney problems, all of which have apparently cleared up since the pet owner stopped feeding the food. In addition to the mineral screen, we also tested for aflatoxin and vomitoxin, both of which came back non detected. We are currently considering running additional tests on the food and will provide additional information if it becomes available.

It has also come to our attention that the previously reported PetAg milk replacer problems are ongoing and that the milk formula is continuing to kill baby animals. With kitten season coming up, this is a product to avoid for anyone involved in rescue work."

I looked around on the web quite a bit today and did not really find anything pertaining to this. I did find one blog that said their permit was reinstated in July of last year but no info to confirm it.

I hate to assume anything but I would guess that it was reinstated at some time.  Huh

hello sherrylynne

The only herbal I know of that is used to support the liver is Milk Thistle. I do not know much about Flower Essences.

Is there a Holistic Vet in your area that you could consult?

In no way, shape or form were you verbally attacked on this forum. Questioned yes, attacked no.

If you should have any questions pertaining as to why your post was removed please refer to the Forum Member Guidelines or contact me personally via pm.

Now I would like to know where exactly you found this info that states there was salmonella found in the recently withdrawn batches. Looking at Nature's Variety's statement I do see anything in it that states this.
