Dry and Wet Foods / Wellness & Old Mother Hubbard / Re: Strictly Wellness

Okay, I've been following this conversation for a while and have a bit of an issue here with one of my cats. CJ has both ARF and IBD. She came home from the vet hospital on Eukanuba Prescription (hate using that) but after feeding tubes twice I was glad to have something she would eat! Now I see on the bag the they are changing the Eukanuba to an Iams Prescription and if I have to change, I want to change to something better. I did use Cal Nat for a while and was pretty happy with that. The cats did well and we had no problems. I think the limited number of ingredients was a bonus for us. However, when I started seeing the photos of the " extra stuff" in the kibble and talking to Natura and hearing about their response (or lack of) I didn't feel safe with them. I tried Wellness Indoor Health because it was fairly low phosphorus but seemed to have decent ingredients. CJ got some nasty diarrhea on it, though so we're back to the Eukanuba right now. I'd like to get her on more quality protein, less grain but that means higher phosphorus levels which isn't great for her ARF. The more grain, lower protein is better for her ARF but not the IBD. I tried homecooking and she wasn't impressed. The only cans she likes are the Fancy Feast and that's not an option either. I'm just majorly @%$#@@ that Natura has handled these concerns so badly because the Cal Nat seemed to be a good food for her. Any thoughts?

Cats / General Cat Health Discussion / Re: JUST DIAGNOSED: KIDNEYS IN DANGER!! HELP!!

Maybe it's time for VET #3. I am lucky enough to live near a major vet teaching hospital so everything that's not "routine" goes there. Since the blood work is so different, I think I'd want yet another opinion. Kidney disease is way too serious to do a wait and see IMHO. Good luck!

Cats / General Cat Health Discussion / scratch on cornea

My 8 year old boycat, Jess, was not opening his left eye or squinting so I took him to the emergency vet. They found a scratch on his cornea, gave me an antibiotic ointment for him and put him in an e-collar. That was Saturday and I don't see much, if any, improvement. Will definitely be making a phone call tomorrow, but just wondered if any of you have had a similar situation. How long should it take an eye to heal? Seems as if something would be better after 3 full days of treatment.

Dry and Wet Foods / Wellness & Old Mother Hubbard / Core dry for cats?

A bit of a complicated situation here ~ five cats, one who had ARF in November. She has since had surgery for bacterial peritonitis, possibly because of one kidney that was badly diseased. Anyway, when she came home from the hospital (live near a major vet teaching hospital) the vet put her on Eukanuba Rx because of IBD, ARF. I had been giving my other cats California Natural Chicken/Rice dry, but lately they have not been eating very enthusiastically. Decided to try the Wellness Core because it's grain free and the phosphorus is actually lower (dry weight calculations) than either the Cal Nat or Eukanuba (which I HATE feeding). Also have noticed a bit more water consumption, not sure whether it really is or whether I'm just paying more attention. It's hard to tell because I have fountains for them. Anyway, has anyone had any experience with Core Dry? I like the ingredients, don't like that they use MF, but I'm running out of good options here. My cats will only eat FF wet and that's not even a choice! Any thoughts? Thanks

Dry and Wet Foods / California Natural / Re: JUST TODAY CHANGE OF INGREDIENTS

If your cat is pooping and having trouble with peeing I would get him to a vet ASAP. It sounds like there might be a lot going on.
My cat, Elizabeth, beautiful 8 year old tiger girl, had urine leaking when she slept. We spent the summer ~ and tons of money ~ at the Michigan State University vet clinic trying to figure out what was going on. They suspected FLUTD but couldn't pinpoint it because she didn't have trouble peeing or any discomfort while peeing. Fortunately, medication has taken care of the problem.
Good luck ~ but this is nothing to wait and see about!

I called Natura, yet again, after the SPCA's warning. They assured me that their ingredients are domestically grown and domestically processed, with the exception of the New Zealand venison. I also asked about their plans for a new facility for their wet food. She said they are looking into using a different one or building one but at this time will continue to use Menu Foods. I'm wondering if this "change" is nothing more than a PR ploy ~ but then I've become rather suspicious lately . . .

They prefer the Fancy Feast, would only eat grilled, but that's not an option for them anymore. Even cooked an organic chicken breast and only one would eat that. Will be picking up some kind of Natura canned to see if they will be tempted. If anyone else has had success with cans, I'd love to hear about it.

Things have settled down here ~ no more vomiting and everyone is acting "normal" so we're staying with the Cal Natural. The other one I liked, NutriSource, turned out to be high phosphorus! I really would like to get them eating some wet food, too, but they aren't crazy about any of the good brands. I'm going to keep trying!

The letter(s) is great and I'm glad that you persisted. The manufacturers need to start listening to us. Thanks for saying what needed to be said ~ and so eloquently!

Several of the cats wouldn't eat the Cal Nat (2/9/08) mixed with the NutriSource so back the NutriSource goes to the pet food store! Only one has vomited again, and that's not unheard of with her. May watch her today and take her tonight if she gets sick again or doesn't seem herself. They have not been drinking a lot of water, either, for which I am grateful. The other two seem fine today. I am wondering if they are reacting to my being so upset, too . . .

It might not be the food at all, but I'm just not willing to take any chances. They seem to like the NutriSource so we'll see what happens. Will definitely keep you posted. Just hope the NutriSource isn't high phosphorus since that's not good for my ARF girl. Crossed fingers, please.

Just spent the afternoon at two different pet food stores after 3 of my 5 started vomiting with Cal Nat. It isn't necessarily the food, but I'm not taking any chances. I bought NutriSource, recommended by WholeDog, out of Minnesota. It looks good and sounds safe . . . I am ready to have a stroke if this doesn't end very soon. Hopefully this will settle better with their tummies. One of the barfers vomited frothy stuff but seems okay today. They all may be going to the vet for blood work and urinalysis! My whole life is pet food right now and it's making me crazy!!!!!!!
