1  Dry and Wet Foods / General Discussion about Dry and Wet Packaged Foods / Re: PMI Nutrition: owned by Mars or Purina? on: May 22, 2009, 04:42:57 PM
I understand completely, and absolutely should have introduced myself.  I also understand your frustrations.   As I said, no one is going to be quoted.  The few questions I have asked are general about manufacturers/companies and not related to anyone personally at the PFL.

Perhaps if they were, more pet owners would be educated and the industry would change. Wink

He's absolutely darling, Sherry, and doesn't look like he's 15!  Is he a Manx or did he lose his tail in an accident?

No worries, GreyGhost.  I don't blame you!  Wink

Bonkers, I'm sorry that you feel that way.  Whether or not my work is similar to the Pet Food List should not really matter to you, so long as I have not "stolen" any information.  In fact, my website has very little overlapping information, and that which does overlap has been taken from hard-earned personal work over the past year and a half.  I have written over 32 companies, made endless phone inquiries, and have compiled all of my information from my own work, not other sources.  This is the first time I have needed to come to a pet food forum to seek answers to only a few questions that I can't seem to get a handle on.   All of my questions are general and no one should be concerned about being quoted.   Any information that I do require from external sources like the Pet Food List will be properly cited.

No offense meant, but it is my prerogative to keep my website to myself until I feel it is ready to be published.  I have no personal gain from my work.  I could have chosen to publish it in a book for profit but have instead dedicated over a year of my life to putting together a resource for consumers free of charge because I am deeply concerned about the lack of awareness in the general public in regards to what is put into pet food and the industry.  I am indeed not "ready" to share my work, for reasons which I already explained.

If you have any other concerns please feel free to address them either publically or via PM.  Wink

6  Cats / General Cat Health Discussion / Re: Senility? on: May 19, 2009, 10:22:26 AM
I'm so sorry, sherrylynne; that must  be hard for  you to see him so confused.  I experienced the same thing with my own dear tabby who passed away two years ago.  She was nearly sixteen and in her last year became increasingly senile.  She stopped using the litterbox (instead she preferred to go in the corner of the basement, which we allowed since it is unfinished and made her happy).  She also became lost (she was indoor/outdoor).  She rarely left the sunny front porch but several times she disappeared and once we found her nearly half a block away in a grove of pine trees, crying her eyes out.  I have no idea if this was related, but it turned out she had a massive tumor.  She went downhill overnight and when we took her to the vet they found a tumor the size of a baseball (we hadn't noticed it because it was tucked under the ribcage).  The vet said it was highly aggressive and probably developed incredibly quickly so I think the senility began long before, but who knows.  I would just make sure Mr. Stubbs has regular vet checkups and if he passes those, then I would say (based on my experience) that his senility is normal.

GreyGhost, I'm sorry, I didn't see your question!  Don't be suspicious--I'm just a concerned consumer and not affiliated with any pet food company.  Here's what I posted at Itchmo:

I've been working for about a year and a half on pet food research.  It started out just for myself, and then my breeder wanted to share the information with her customers.  The webpage I made up for her was really messy so it sort of blossomed into a full-fledged project.  It's about half done right now and I anticipate probably another year before it's fully complete.  I have a site up now but it is not open to the general public, only those whom I feel have an immediate need and to those who are helping me to edit and refine.  Very shortly I will be asking for some help here in "overviewing" my compilation of manufactures/companies, if members would be willing to oblige.  However, I expect it will take me a good week to double-check my information--as I said earlier, I do not ask for help unless I cannot find something myself.

I have one cat, a Ragdoll, who is the love of my life!  I currently feed her EVO dry and Wellness wet, but I would like to switch entirely to Nature's Logic soon.   I cannot afford to feed her entirely wet (though I would like to) and I don't have the lifestyle (at the moment) to feed homemade or raw.  I fostered a Ragdoll kitten for seven months a while ago and did experiment with feeding him raw--he loved it but my own cat will not touch it.

If I was paid for it, I would spend my life rescuing cats and educating the public about proper pet care.  I am also a huge believer in spay/neuter and would like to initiate statewide campaigns for mandatory s/n laws.  That's just a dream right now...maybe someday. Wink

Hope that answered your questions--feel free to ask more (except the website address; I am not ready to share it), I don't mind answering them! Smiley

To answer your question more specifically, I don't like doing something "incompletely" and keeping my project "in hiatus" encourages me to work on it.  I also would prefer to present it in its fully finished form.  Wink

10  Dry and Wet Foods / General Discussion about Dry and Wet Packaged Foods / PMI Nutrition: owned by Mars or Purina? on: May 18, 2009, 06:24:28 PM
I can't seem to figure this one out.  The common consensus seems to be that Purina is the owner of PMI Nutrition (including the results of Find Owner Search). However, I read somewhere that it has more recently been sold to MARS, and The Pet Food List notes PMI under the Mars manufacturer.  Is it possible that it is owned by Purina and manufactured by Mars?

12  Dry and Wet Foods / Purina Pet Foods / Purina vs. Ohio Pet Foods? on: May 14, 2009, 03:59:58 PM
This question is in regards to the brands listed on the Ohio Pet Foods website (http://www.ohiopetfoods.com/), who, incidentally, state that they are a privately held corporation.

Some of the brands they list--example: Hi-Pro--are manufactured by Purina.

PFL's info is below:

I think I remember reading about a connection between the two companies (is Ohio the manufacturer?) but wanted to confirm it here.  I suspect people at PFL will know somehting about it.

Thanks again,
LadyJemima

Thanks, Bonkers.  I don't think I'm going to include it in my research, though, without a site with company information.  Shame, because it doesn't look too bad.
