While normal testing conducted by Hartz and UFAC has not revealed the presence of Salmonella in any Hartz products, sampling conducted by the FDA did detect the presence of Salmonella.
It is disturbing that the quality control testing of Hartz and UFAC did not pick this up. But it is a positive thing that FDA did and that oversights are being uncovered...slowly...

Catmom5 and all, I hope CJ hangs in there and overcomes the problem. I know we have all made definite changes for the better in our pet's foods. It is a long, slow process but I think most people have found a solution they feel temporarily comfortable with by now. For those of us on this forum, we will never forget, because our pets hold such a special place in our hearts and families, and the shock and scare over all of this weighs heavy. I continue to hope for the day when petood will be all we want it to be, but as wise consumers we will always stay on top of this from now on; always! That was a necessary change! Meanwhile, even when it is quiet on the forum, never stop spreading the word to all you meet. And of the dear ones who were lost, may they rest in peace.

Dry and Wet Foods / General Discussion about Dry and Wet Packaged Foods / Re: Need Suggestions For Getting Dry Food Kitty To Eat Wet

Hi, Geff, It's hard not to spoil your baby! I have all 3 of mine off dry food for good, now. One gave me a difficult time in much the same way yours is, nibbling then stopping. I finally figured out she was so hungry she couldn't help herself, but after curbing her appetite with the wet, continued to protest and wait it out hoping to get dry. But then I would leave it down and catch her eating the wet later when I wasn't watching. Mine have never gotten sick from leaving the wet down half a day until the next feeding, if there is any left! Mixing wet and dry is helpful. Transitioning by wetting the dry (with water or tuna juice) also helps. It can take months and so be patient! I did the change from canned to home-cooked that way, too. I liked your suggestion of paper bowls. I, too, am sick of washing dishes (for me thats 6 plates per day!) and the paper-plate experiment was funny to watch-scoot, scoot- scoot! They also leaked onto the floor. I will definitely try the paper bowl suggestion. Suction cups? Lastly, I sure wish there was a way to make dry food; I would do it. My guys really miss it. I miss the convenience when I need to be away for a while, too! Good luck!

Great work, maryd, PetFoodTracker and all! I don't think there is any safe cat or dog food on the market now. The toxins are randomly found; so, sure, many companies may have some safe products but who is to say which ones are safe unless each bag is tested? I have seen more than enough, and whatever the cause of this very sad scandal, I just can't take that gamble at the stores. I had previously used one of the products in question after ton's of research. Guess the research I should have been doing was laboratory research! And I am still getting the same old put-downs from people who continue to use or sell commercial pet food! It is only here on the Forums that I have support and understanding on this. Good luck, everyone, when feeding your sweet animals!

Garypen, Thanks for the detective work. Pet Food Companies should be shaking in their boots with this kind of concern and follow up from the public. Sure, some can pull the wool over our eyes, but not always. This is exactly what needs to be happening across the country by concerned folks. Good work!

Shulie, I'm with Catmom5, and would get a third opinion. That may help you sort this out. Don't think the worst, yet! I have always been amazed at the various opinions, diagnoses and treatments from both MD's and Vets when it comes to problem solving. A bit of research by you will help, also. I will say a prayer for Samson! May all be well!

Geff, You just made me think, too. If I were a global trader, I would want what I do for a living to work well. And I, too, was of the mindset of "One planet, one people" philosophy for many years. Rethinking this now, I would say that the old adages "Charity begins at home" and "in your own back yard" are wise. We all need to take care of ourselves and our pets, families and loved ones before we can be happy enough to extend what we have beyond the home boundaries. I learned this as a nurse. And it is more efficient (energy saving, environment-wise) also, don't you think? Especially for those who feel frustrated that they can't make a difference for whatever reason (not enough money or education or whatever). If everyone in the world just did whatever tiny bit they could, right where they were, it would end up being a collective effort, a snowball effect. Then, on a larger scale, what if the United States spent their resources feeding our hungry and giving medical care to poor and elderly instead of worrying about oil across the world and politics we have no business in? Perhaps then we would be an example instead of a target! Wishful thinking and sometimes not as easy to do as it sounds. Thanks for your comments.

Recall Related Information / Kudos / Thank you, Peter DeFazio

In his latest "Peter DeFazio Reports" mailing, Oregon Representative DeFazio states "Our tax dollars should be used to contract with companies that employ American workers, not to build factories and provide jobs overseas." DeFazio is a proponent of the Buy American Act, which gives preference to American-made goods in federal government purchases. He states "Maintaining a robust domestic manufacturing base is important for both our economic and national security." The report also says in just the last 6 years, 3 million manufacturing jobs have been lost, and since 1999, over 40,000 manufacturing plants have closed. He proposes that we: 1) Enforce and expand the Buy American Act 2) Curtail tax deductions and federal contracts for companies that export jobs 3) Withdraw from and renegotiate trade deals such as NAFTA 4) Enforce laws against dumping foreign products and imposing stiff tariffs in response 5) Increase funding for programs that assist small manufacturers to upgrade their operations
Thank you Pete! Great work! I hope you received my phone message about Pet Food labeling and toxic substances in Pet Foods, too!

Hey, Tom, I mean Geff, Notice I specified "Tell him you are..." because the cartoon says "Tell her you are..." and we all know it works both ways! I think Computer Dating Services like Yahoo Personals have really streamlined the getting-to-know-you process. Fascinating subject...getting to know someone purely on an intellectual level before the usual dating rituals take place. But as these dogs demonstrate, the whole process can be a dangerous thing in the paws of an insincere applicant! But that's another whole 'can of trouble!' Back to the cartoons!

Howwwllll!!!! Now can you dig up a few for cats? Those are pretty darn funny, Davis! I could add more to these..."Tell him you've had all your shots, never had fleas, don't roam, excrement doesn't smell, pure-bred with papers..." ha-ha!

Let's face it...you can't be 100% safe and sure unless you grow your own products. Trade has become so global, barely anything is purely from one source now. Then when you see a label "Product of" you really have to wonder! I wish this kind of effort and passion (for money) was put into global peace, but seems that trade contributes to warfare. We won't probably see a solution to it in our lifetime; it will take complete devastation before the problem is truly addressed. Meanwhile, everyone, do your best to "be the change". Put your dollars where they make a difference! And research, research, research!

Well, I was also motivated because the other two cats soon figured out what was going on in the bathroom!!! I felt guilty "treating" one and not the others! They would all still prefer dry. Just like kids and candy. There must be some special ingredient that is put in dry to make cats addicted-besides the sprayed on blood!

Sharon, That is a great idea. I once rented a house near the beach that was made of Shake Shingles. It was hot as blazes. I used to worry so when I left for work, as there was no A/C. I would hang wet sheets in the windows (inside-in the bathroom) so the cats would have a cool place to go. I never thought of the ice-block trick.
