61  Dry and Wet Foods / General Discussion about Dry and Wet Packaged Foods / Re: Premix Formulations Used In Commercial Pet Foods on: May 26, 2009, 09:32:31 PM
I contacted the Director of Quality Control at Wellness regarding their sourcing for the vitamin pre-mix they use, since I do feed a little Wellness to the gang and I know a lot of other people do, too.  Here's her response (she responded today, Memorial Day):

"We do get our vitamins and minerals from Trouw Nutrition. What we get though,
is a custom blend just for our products with a separate specification. I have
been in contact with them and have received written notification and
guarantee that our blend is in no way affected by the Nutro recall.

It is my understanding that only a limited amount of the Nutro product is
affected. Of course I don't have all the details, but it sounds like only one
batch of premix.

I am out of the office for the next few days but you can call or email me if
you have anymore questions."

Here's the reply I received today from the Director of Quality at Wellness:

"No problem with the questions. That's what we're here for. My dog has a
sorted past with commercial pet food and seizures, so I know a little about
being worried.

We require a certificate of analysis for every batch that is made for the
ingredient premix. We audit our suppliers periodically to make sure their
systems are working as they should be. That being said, since the recent
recall, we have ordered some extra testing. Everything has come back in line
so far, but we continue to monitor our supplier- as we do all our suppliers."

Sounds like good QC processes.  But I'm still doing the testing.

5Cat, good point.  I just emailed her again asking if they conduct any regular testing of the pre-mix as part of their standard QC processes; and if they tested any of their batches specifically since the Nutro recall.

I'm very close to UC Davis and am researching how to send the Wellness food to their lab for testing.  If anyone has any info on UC Davis testing please let me know or PM me.

I would like to get the Wellness canned grainless that I feed my gang tested just to be absolutely sure.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what lab to use?  I'm going to hold off feeding the Wellness until I can get test results.
65  Dry and Wet Foods / Wellness & Old Mother Hubbard / Re: Did Wellness change formula of canned? on: April 29, 2009, 11:35:37 PM
I watch the Wellness canned grain free I feed my crew like a hawk and haven't noticed any change, even the slightest little change.  I also smash it all up looking for any tiny little pieces that shouldn't belong there.  I haven't noticed any one of mine not wanting to eat it.  In fact, it seems like they like it better than ever.  Hhhmmm.....

Geez, she sure is a sweet looking little gal!  I can see the bond between the two of you even in the photos, so you've definitely come a long way.  All you need is love I guess!
67  Cats / General Cat Health Discussion / Re: Constipation on: April 29, 2009, 11:29:13 PM
Sherrylynne, wow, glad to hear she's mostly on Wellness.  To tell you the truth, I also have to supplement every day with a little pumpkin and I feed some Wellness, too.  All three of them get about half a teaspoon a day.  Even the kittens.  Oh wait, the kittens are almost a year old!  I wonder if I can still call them the kittens Huh
68  Dry and Wet Foods / Orijen / Re: Cat deaths linked to Orijen on: April 29, 2009, 11:24:51 PM
Thanks, maxymia, please keep us posted.  I sure hope all the affected kitties continue to recover.  I saw a post about Diesel walking again, and I was so thrilled.  Poor little baby doll, what she and all the others had to go through.  Not to mention the pet parents.  No sums would be enough for this tragedy.
69  Dry and Wet Foods / Nutro / Re: Any experiences with Nutro DRY DOG products to share? on: April 29, 2009, 11:21:27 PM
I have no idea who we're supposed to believe anymore!
I believe the sick and dead pets.  I don't know of another pet food that has so much bad publicity that is easily obtainable.  Something is wrong with the food. Period.
70  Dry and Wet Foods / Evangers / Re: Evangers Canned Cat Food on: April 29, 2009, 11:19:10 PM
Khari, I've done searches for updates on Evangers since the original FDA notice and couldn't find anything that seemed like a resolution.  So good for you that you came up with this article.  I've never used Evangers so I don't really have a comment on the food itself.  I didn't like the way the company handled the FDA notice though.  They continually said the FDA made some kind of a mistake, but now it seems they are admitting to finally be in compliance.

If you have enough brands to give your kitties in rotation, and they don't seem to like the Evangers, maybe when you run out just don't offer it any more.

Have you tried Wellness canned grain free yet?  I feed my crew a little every day but mostly they are on a raw diet.
71  Dry and Wet Foods / General Discussion about Dry and Wet Packaged Foods / Re: what to feed? on: March 14, 2009, 09:26:14 PM
I think if she's eating the wet food it's still a much better food than the dry food is for her.  The big challange here was just to get her off the dry food, which you should be congratulated for that.  I had to transition several kitties off the additive dry food and it wasn't easy.  I'm a raw feeder now using Felines Pride and Aunt Jeni with a little daily Wellness canned grain free.  I also like to follow Dr. Hodgkins as well, and I first read about Felines Pride in her book.  Still, I watch the food I feed them like a hawk to make sure nothing weird is going on with it first, and then watch them eat it before and after to make sure they don't get sick.  Yes, it's called over analyzing aka paranoid over what the pet food industry is doing to their food.

I'm also glad to hear she's losing weight if she needs to.  Good luck!
72  Miscellaneous / General chit chat / Well Wishes Needed for Misty's Mommie on: March 11, 2009, 09:51:07 PM
Misty's mommie, GreyGhost, had a bad medical problem a couple of weeks ago but has seemed to be on the rebound quite wonderfully.  Just want to send her tons of well wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery, to someone that has helped so many others in her life.  God bless her and keep her safe for us.

Champion PetFoods has put up another press release update on their half-a$$ efforts in making good on this tragedy:

74  Dry and Wet Foods / General Discussion about Dry and Wet Packaged Foods / Re: Newman's Organic Beef Varieties from Uruguay on: March 11, 2009, 08:37:43 PM
Coontuffy, I have to say if the raccoons won't eat it then it's absolutely not fit for any consumption.  I've lived around raccoons and they eat pure garbage so if they won't eat the cat food there's a major problem.  I hope your kitties that ate it recover soon.  The oozing out of the can may be from bacteria growing inside it and creating more mass. Please keep us updated on what Newman's responds with.
