3  Dry and Wet Foods / Canidae / Re: Best brand food: Canidae on: October 21, 2010, 10:48:13 AM
We've all heard of Canidae, trust me.

I used it for a while until they started to have problems.  I stopped using it & never looked back.

I'm afraid I'm one of these really paranoid pet parents........once a pet food, especially one I was feeding my dog, has problems, that's the end of the road for me.  I think a lot of pet parents were feeding Canidae until those problems started & most of them then shied away from it.

I believe this was about the time I decided to bring the bag back & that was the end of that story:

ETA:  I didn't bother to note any of them but they had problems after that also.  Just saying.......

Just so you know, this is a supplement for joints & really works quite well.  I used to give it to my other Lab, Sasha, because she had so many hip/joint problems.  I also recommended it to other people & it worked out well for their dogs also.  This doesn't ever stop, does it?

The Charges against Evangers Pet Food

    * Written By: Susan Thixton
    * 4-12-2010
    * Categorized in: Pet Food News

There has been much confusion over the charges against Joel and Holly Sher of Evanger’s Pet Food; the Cook County Circuit Court documents provided to TruthaboutPetFood.com sets the record straight.  While there remains a trial to determine guilt or innocence, the charges against these owners of Evanger’s Pet Food are at least now clear.

Filed March 24, 2010 from the Circuit Court of Cook County Criminal Division; The People of the State of Illinois versus Joel Sher, Holly Sher.

The Introduction states “The Defendants Joel Sher and Holly Sher are charged by complaint with commission of the offenses of theft of property of a value in excess of $500,000, a non-probationable Class 1 felony, punishable by a period of incarceration in the Illinois Department of Corrections of not less than 4, but not more than 15 years.  In addition, both are charged with money laundering over $500,000.”

While this court document does not provide much insight on the money laundering charges, it does provide great detail of alleged gas and electric ‘diversion scheme’ going back several years not only at the Evanger’s Pet Food Plant but at Joel and Holly Sher’s home as well.

“A Nicor (gas company) inspection on October 14, 2007 revealed that the gas line had been rerouted to bypass the meter.  Both the Village of Wheeling Police Department and Fire Department documented this incident with reports and photos.  Nicor stated that during an inspection at Evanger’s Dog and Cat Food Company on December 5, 2008 NICOR representatives observed an unlawful diversion of a gas line capped off.  Prior to completing their inspection, one of the owners, Joel Sher, ordered them off of the premises.  NICOR officials returned later that same day and observed that the illegal piping had been removed.  This led to a second inspection on December 5, 2008, with the assistance of the Wheeling Police and Fire Departments, which lead to the discovery of underground piping which ad diverted gas service.  At that time NICOR terminated the service due to the unsafe conditions created by the illegal diversion.”

Several former and existing employees of Evanger’s Dog and Cat Food Company were interviewed by Cook County State Attorney Office; all provided details of the alleged gas and electric tampering.  An interview of a former Evanger’s employee stated “she had been to the Sher’s home in Lincolnwood, IL and observed a pipe that was being used for an illegal gas utility hook-up.”

The following alarming statement has not been mentioned in previous press releases concerning Evanger’s…
“Interview of Beverly Slaby”
“On September 17, 2009, Beverly Slaby, Licensed Environmental Health Practitioner for the Community Development Office for the Village of Wheeling was interviewed.  Slaby investigated Evanger’s Dog and Cat Food Company for a multitude of health and sanitation issues.  Slaby stated that her office is directly involved in public health matters related to food and septic systems.  Slaby stated that her contact for the investigation was Tom and Jennifer Schaade.  The Schaade’s provided drawings and color photos of not only the unsanitary conditions at the plant, but also of illegal utility hook-ups.  Slaby also stated that the investigation began in 2006 and continued through 2008.”

11  Miscellaneous / General chit chat / Letter to God on: April 08, 2010, 08:26:47 AM
Somebody sent me this quite a while ago.  To those of you who have never seen it, I'm posting it for you.....thanks to PetPlace:

Our 14-year-old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her, you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven.

That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought he had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, "To Meredith," in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, "When a Pet Dies." Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

Love,

God

I'm sure I posted a while back about Party Animal.......one of the few canned dog foods I use (but rarely).  I had a can of Evangers in my cabinets from a while ago when I used to feed it & I also had a can of PA.  Before I threw the Evangers away, I happened to notice that the bottom of the cans were identical, including the bb stamp.

I sent PA two or three emails asking them who cans for them & they never bothered to answer me.  So that puts this particular canned food in a questionable state until I can get more info.  This had to be a yr ago when the story broke about the FDA & the emergency permit........I still don't know any more than I did then as to who cans for them but their silence speaks volumes if you get my drift....... Shocked

The more I read about this, the more I'm blown away.  Just who are these people?

Bonkers:

Thanks for info.  I had heard that about money laundering when I was reading more on it yesterday.  Here's an interesting article that goes into detail:

http://money.howstuffworks.com/money-laundering.htm

Often wondered exactly how this worked so I looked it up.  Duh!

I wonder if there are any other companies that use Evangers for canning (besides those that you just named).  Bet me they are all running around looking for a new spot!  I don't see how they can survive this.

I used to feed Evangers & believed it was a healthy dog food.......until the first incident w/the FDA when I didn't feel Joel & Holly were being honest about the whole situation.  That was enough for me.

This whole thing is just mind boggling.

Bonkers & Perseus:

My thoughts exactly:  this sort of makes you question all of their ethics, doesn't it?  I stopped using their food the minute there was a question about cooking the food in the can properly.

I sure wish I knew who else they can for because I don't want to use those foods either.  I wonder if they'll shut them down.

I had to post this because this one just blew me away. Shocked
