1  Dry and Wet Foods / Evangers / Re: Evangers Canned Dog Food on: May 19, 2007, 11:27:29 PM
Just wanted to say that we've been very happy with the Evangers Hunk of Beef for dogs.  I don't believe it's meant to be used as a complete meal, so we use it as a special treat and mix it in with our dog's dry food occasionally - if we could afford to, we would do it everytime.

Quite simply, it is a hunk of beef.  The ingredient list reads:  "100% whole beef cooked in its own juices".  They actually have a label that says "Not for human consumption", which makes me think my husband is not the only who's stared longingly at Symba's dinner Smiley   I should add that Symba loves it too..but then again, he loves just about anything!

Given the quality of this product, I am encouraged to try their other lines.  Also, I'm pleased that Evangers is on PETA's 'do not test on animals' list.
My dog also loves the hunk of beef which I do mix in with her dry a couple times a week. I try to mix some Evangers with the Karma dry. While on these two foods my dogs fur has thickened. Had been using Nutro Wholistic with Merrick's canned. Switched to Karma last Sept. with still using Merrick. My dog still was eating grass to make herself throw up so she knew something was not right or didnt' agree with her in the Merrick's canned so stopped using that and now only strictly use Evangers. Guess what? No more grass eating and throwing up. Glad Evangers has what is says it has on the can.
2  Pet Products and Resources (NOT foods) / Pet Treats / Re: Suggestions for treats? on: May 19, 2007, 11:21:23 PM
Found dog biscuits at a local health food store. They are called Beyond Nutrition made by Owen & Mandeville Ingredients are: oats, honey, coconut oil, skim milk, vanilla. web site is: www.ompetproducts.com. So far my dog loves these and so do I as there is no wheat, corn, soy or anything else I would not feed her in them.

Please check the organicconsumers.org site as they discuss genetically modified food and I believe soybean is discussed on there as being one of the foods besides corn that is modified. Another good site for a wealth of information is dogtorJ.com Pet food recalls, what to eat, what not to eat, among other ideas and facts related to food are on there if anyone would like to find out more on the soy. These two sites will be of help.
4  Recall Related Information / General Recall Discussion / Re: ANY SAFE FOOD OUT THERE? on: May 19, 2007, 11:10:58 PM
I'm feeding Canidae dry and Evanger's canned - and neither of them have hit the recall list  Grin!
Canidae - http://www.canidae.com/
Evanger's - http://www.evangersdogfood.com/

For those of you that favor raw, Evanger's offers 100% meat canned product - the only additive is water for processing.  Evanger's is a small manufacturing plant in Ill. and they do manufacture for other labels (I don't know who).

Currently I'm feeding their 100% meat product in fear of 'additives' showing up on the recall list.  My dogs love the Evanger's food, and any additives (minerals, vitamines, etc.) are coming from the Canidae dry food along with Missing Link.

If you can find Evanger's and you are use to buying premiun dog food (like I was), you will be put off by their label.  I have to admit I was.  I passed it by several times 'cause it has a funky label that makes it look like some cheap knock-off.  Thank goodness my feed store set me straight!  It's a premium canned food with a 1950's label and a reasonable price  Shocked

I was still stand-offish, check them out on-line and wrote emails to the company - I'm a believer now.  I switched from Canidea, Natural Balance and Wellness canned food just months before the recall - and thank goodness I did now that both Wellness and Natural Balance have hit the list.  If you can find Evanger's try it - my cost per can switch went from $1.70(US)/per can to $.89(US)/per can with the peace of mind that nothing but 100% meat is in the can - and now I have control of what additives are added to my 'kids' food.
Glad you found Evangers. I have had my dog on this and Karma organic dry. Evangers also has pheasant, buffalo, venison and the whole hunk of beef too. My dog loves all of the Evangers. Reasonably priced also. I live in IL so don't know if that makes price lower since it doesn't need to be shipped very far but you can order from their site too. Wish you the best in the health of you and yours.
5  Dry and Wet Foods / Royal Canin / Re: I.V.D. potato based diets on: May 11, 2007, 03:33:19 AM
Thank you for the information. I will refrain from feeding anything like that to my dog. She's doing fine on Karma dry mixed with Evangers canned which is what I had her on when this recall happened.
6  Dry and Wet Foods / Sam's Club / Re: Sams Super Premium Dry for all ages dog food on: May 11, 2007, 03:29:04 AM
I had fed my previous dog Beef n' More from Sam's club. Just read a post on another site that this has so much garbage in it but now with the dog gone have no way to test to see if she got cancer as a result of this food. The bag claimed it was top grade, premium food. At the time I did not have a computer so couldn't do research as I can now. You might want to have her read you the ingredients. Here is a site that covers the recalls and also has other information on the grains, vaccinations, soy, corn, canola oil, etc. It is: doctorJ.com
7  Dry and Wet Foods / Merrick / Re: Consider This Before Feeding Merrick on: May 11, 2007, 03:24:47 AM
I bought some canned French Country Cafe for my pup in an attempt to get her off of the IVD (Royal Canin) Duck & Potato she has been eating for the last 18 months or so.

Used to feed raw years ago (she did great on it), but she stopped tolerating it around the time she was diagnosed with Mast Cell cancer (which was releasing histamine into her system and making her stomach super sensitive).  I thank God every day that her cancer is not systemic and that we've been able to control it locally.  She is my world!

But even though her stomach is much less sensitive now, I cannot seem to successfully switch her food.  Granted, the IVD did work.  But I've always felt nervous about the duck by-products -- and the recall gave me extra motivation to switch.

The French Country Cafe is the closest thing Merrick makes with all duck protein (there is some turkey broth in it).  My dog LOVES it -- goes crazy for it.  I switched over the course of a week or so, and about every-other-day she would have a little bit of soft stool -- nothing alarming.  Unfortunately, yesterday she had a major episode of diarrhea (no vomiting) -- I spent my evening cleaning carpets... -- so we're back to the IVD today.

Anyone else having this issue with Merrick?

I'm pretty frustrated.  I wonder if we switched more slowly if that would make a difference.  Any other recommendations for a duck food (canned and dry)?  We did try Evangers Duck and Sweet Potato, but had an issue with label discrepancy that made me nervous (see my post in Evangers).  Eagle Pack Duck and Oatmeal is another option.

Any advice / input is welcome.
Thx for that part on the soft stools. Now it all makes sense when I had my dog on Merrick canned that her stools would be entirely too soft as I mixed the food with Karma dry and now her stools are normal again. At first I thought it was due to the fact I adopted her from a shelter and she was still a little shy and getting used to her forever home. Hope no one else is going thru this too.
8  Recall Related Information / General Recall Discussion / Re: Dairy supply safe? on: May 11, 2007, 03:13:59 AM
I have been drinking soy milk for several years. I wouldn't drink a ton of it, though, and if you are thinking of switching, go for organic and non-GM. I have read that girls reach puberty a few years sooner now because of the hormones in cow's milk; but soy milk has phyto-estrogens, too!
Here is a site with a lot of information covering soy. Anyone using it should read this and form your own opinion. The site is: dogtorJ.com They also cover the pet recalls and a ton of helpful information.

No "MAYBE" on the "BUSHSH*T" Sylvia!

You're so right Geff when you say it's amazing when stating it's amazing that we're still alive!!!....

I've always wondered why there has been such an increase in human diseases in the last 10 years! I think a lot of us have just been blaming it on "environmental" things (which I'm sure DO play a PART)......but what about the rise in things such as Autism?

Autism is one thing that I've played particular attention to as my son is a High Functioning Autistic........bu there really has been a documented rise in Autism in the last 10 years or so.....at all levels.

It would be interesting to do a research on Chinese imports that could be responsible for Neurological disorders...for instance Folic Acid vitamins that women take during pregnancy?.......Look what "Thalidimide" caused back in the 50's till it was banned in the early 60's!

Just some "food" for thought!............

Just like I make my own petfood ......I'd be making my own baby food these days too. I had many friends who did it years ago!

When a person is scared to take something as simple as Vitamin C......all definitely
is NOT right in this world!.......WAKE UP BUSH!!!!....is it any wonder this man is so disliked?..........
You might like to go to this site as it has a wealth of information not only on the pet recall but covers autism, adhd, thyroid problems among other things. Could be something helpful you could use. It is: dogtorJ.com
10  Dry and Wet Foods / Royal Canin / I.V.D. potato based diets on: May 09, 2007, 06:40:50 PM
Would appreciate any information on I.V.D. potato based diet for pets. Anyone have a site that will give more information on this type of food? Contains no grains whatsoever so might be a safe food to feed. Thx in advance for your help.
11  Pet Products and Resources (NOT foods) / Pet Treats / Re: Whole life and Halo on: May 09, 2007, 06:37:48 PM
Just read on most recent update recall list on here that Halo (Spot's Stew) is in a recall. Just thought I'd let you know since you use these treats. Does not say if the treats are involved in recall.

I guess JJ has chosen to ignore the previous post about ED being used in MANY brands of pet food, mostly the so-called holistic brands. I'm not defending its use, if it is that harmful. Just pointing out that singling out Merrick is ignorant, and unfair. (Just as singling Blue Buffalo for menadione was.)Sorry I did not ignore another post. On the Itchmo forum a biological nutritionist just posted EDDI is an organic form of iodine so feel free to feed food with that in it to your pets.

However, pet owners should keep being vocal about their disapproval of it. And, maybe, just as Blue, Evangers, and others have decided to remove menadione, the manufacturers will cease using ED.

Jenny - My cats seem to like the turkey-based Merrick cans the best (Turducken and Thanksgiving). And, they have a love/hate relationship with Pot Pie (chicken).

Just an FYI, Evo canned is made by Menu, as is all Natura canned food. I don't buy their canned foods for that reason. If they get their own plant, as they promised, I will consider it at that time.
13  Dry and Wet Foods / Karma / Re: New Statement From Natura's Website on: May 09, 2007, 06:22:00 PM
I called manufacturers of Karma on Mon. 5-7-2007 and asked the source of their rice protein. A rep informed me that is was from rice grown in the United States and was organic rice.
14  Dry and Wet Foods / Merrick / Re: Consider This Before Feeding Merrick on: May 08, 2007, 01:50:25 AM
But...It's everything but the moo.

But, seriously, if you take Menu, ANI, and the mainstream canned foods out of the picture, that only leaves Merrick and Evangers-made products, as far as I can tell. And, I wasn't happy with Evangers or Felidae. So, that leaves Merrick for me.

If there turns out to be a problem with Merrick, I may be forced to go all dry. I am already thinking of mixing Evo and CalNat for increased meat/decreased carb. Unfortunately, all-dry creates its own problems. Most notably, lack of water. (One of my cats doesn't drink water AT ALL. She apparently gets all of her water from the canned food.)

So, I'm also conidering something like Sheba. It's from a mainstream brand, Mars. But, it has the moisture they need to ingest with their foods, high meat, and low/no carb. Check out this ingredient list: Water, Chicken Breast, Tapioca Starch, Guar Gum. That's it. It's not complete and balenced. But, as an adjunct to a dry balanced food, it should be OK. (Analysis: Protein 13% min, Fiber 0.4% max, Fat 0.3% min, Moisture 85% max. )

Of course, this is only if something bad is discovered about Merrick.
on Itchmo.com forum 4luvofpets did a post on the Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide that is in Merrick wet and dry. She posted link from toxnet that claims when cows eat any of this then their milk is unfit for human consumption. It is Anti-Freeze. I emailed Merrick prior to seeing info on Itchmo asking them what this was and they told me organic iodine? huh? My dog was eating grass again to make herself throw-up so no more Merrick of any kind in my house ever. I now use Evangers canned and Karma dry. My dog has actually started to put on a lil wt as she seemed a lil thin for a husky/shepherd mix but now is thriving. Just thought I'd let you know about Merrick in case you decided to use it. Take care.
15  Dry and Wet Foods / Merrick / Re: Consider This Before Feeding Merrick on: May 06, 2007, 08:35:37 PM
On another forum Itchmo we have a post from 4luvofpets under A Question about Merrick's. In that section I have found an ingredient called Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide that this person found on the toxnet claiming it makes milk unfit for human consumption when given to cows so would this make it safe for our pets food and for them to be eating it? She posted this site to check out for full contents if anyone would want to read more about this Ethylenediamin stuff. It is: http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/r?dbs+hsdb:@term+@rn+@rel+5700-49-2 My dog loved the canned but took rest back to store. Now use Karma dry and Evangers wet.
