FREMONT, NEBRASKA, April 19, 2013 –Natura Pet Products is voluntarily expanding its March 29, 2013 recall of dry pet foods because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The expanded recall now includes all dry pet food products and treats with expiration dates prior to and including March 24, 2014. Please see the table below for details of affected products.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Sampling conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of Salmonella in additional dry pet food and a cat pet treat. In an abundance of caution, Natura is also recalling product made in the surrounding timeframe. This action affects dry pet foods and treats only; no canned wet food or biscuits are affected by this announcement.

The affected products are sold through veterinary clinics and select pet specialty retailers nationwide and in Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and Costa Rica, as well as online.

Bravo! Issues a Voluntary Recall for Three Raw Frozen Food Diet for Dogs and Cats Because of Possible Salmonella Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 3, 2013 - Bravo! is voluntarily recalling three of its raw diet frozen foods for dogs and cats: 5 lb tubes of Bravo! Chicken Balance product item code 21-405 with "best used by" dates of 3_6_15 and 3_12_15; 2 lb Bravo! Chicken Blend product item code 21-102 with the "best used by" date of 3_21_15 and 5 lb. bags of Bravo! Beef Blend Burgers product item code 51-508 with the "best used by" dates of 3_21_15 and 3_22_15, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

This recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution, as while these products tested negative for pathogens by an independent third party prior to distribution, they were run on the same day or an adjacent day to a product that tested positive for pathogens. The product that tested positive has been 100 percent contained and is not subject to this recall.

The recall involves only:

    5 lb. Bravo! Chicken Balance frozen raw diet chubs (tubes) with "best used by" dates of 3_6_15 and 3_12_15 imprinted on the side of the plastic casing. Only 26 cases with the 3_6_15 date were distributed nationally and 36 cases with 3_12_15 date were distributed nationally.
    2 lb. Bravo! Chicken Blend frozen raw diet chubs (tubes) with the "best used by" date of 3_21_15 imprinted on the side of the plastic casing. Only 67 cases with 3_21_15 date were distributed nationally.
    5 lb. Bravo! Beef Blend Burgers bags with the "best used by" dates of 3_21_15 and 3_22_15 imprinted on the back panel of the plastic bag. Only 47 cases with the 3_21_15 date were distributed nationally and 55 cases with the 3_22_15 date were distributed nationally.

No other products or sizes are affected.

The recalled product should not be sold or fed to pets. The company has received no reports of illness in either people or animals associated with this product.

While these products tested negative, Bravo! is allowing concerned pet owners to return unopened frozen tubes of food and patties to the store where purchased for a full refund. Pet owners should dispose of unopened product in a safe manner (example, a securely covered trash receptacle). Consumers who believe they have opened these products at home should just dispose of the product in a safe manner and contact the retailer where they purchased their product for a full refund.

Q: Why are you recalling your product?

A:  FDA regulations do not allow the presence of salmonella in cooked pet foods (canned or kibble).  Even though we do not manufacture cooked foods, we are required to comply with the same standards.  BARF World wants to fully cooperate with the FDA, and is complying with their regulations.
                                                                                                                                         
While the BARF World products have not been tested and found positive for Salmonella, the FDA is requesting that we recall all products that were made on the same day that a positive salmonella test occurred in the manufacturing plant.

Q:  Does this mean that my pet is going to get salmonella poisoning?

A:  Salmonella poisoning is a rare occurrence in dogs and cats, although the possibility does exist.  They are highly resistant, but not immune to pathogens (bacteria) such as salmonella.  This is much more of a concern for humans, as we are not equipped with the digestive tools to process raw meat.  This is why we need to cook our meats, as well as wash our hands, utensils, and preparation area thoroughly. Dogs and cats, on the other hand, are equipped with much more potent stomach acid and a shorter digestive tract that allows raw food to process extremely quickly.  For several thousand years, dogs and cats have eaten raw meat, spoiled meat, dirt, feces, grass, garbage, bones, and all sorts of bacteria-laden things.  They are biologically designed to handle pathogens, as evidenced by the presence of salmonella in their feces.
           
Q:  How could BARF World food have become contaminated?

A:  Whether bought directly from the manufacturer, or purchased from your local grocer, raw meat (especially poultry) contains pathogens.  The USDA has “tolerance levels” for salmonella, as it is a recognized fact of life.  This means that poultry producers are allowed to have some bacteria in their products.  Most raw meats contain low levels of pathogens most of the time.  Again, the digestive system of a dog or cat is designed to handle a higher bacterial load than that of a human.  Contamination with low levels of bacteria happens long before the ingredients arrive at the production facility for processing.

Q:  What does all this mean for my pet and me?

A:  Only you can determine if feeding a raw food diet is the right choice for your pet.  All pet foods carry some risk.  Many of the recalls from last year were for dry and canned pet foods, so there is no such thing as a bacteria-free, sterile food. Feeding a high-quality diet, made with superior ingredients, as well as following all recommendations pertaining to storage, temperature, and hygiene can reduce these risks.

Q:  How will I know if my pet has contracted salmonella?

A:  It is unlikely that your pet will contract salmonella.  However, it is possible.  Puppies, seniors, and dogs with compromised immune systems are the most likely to exhibit symptoms.  Symptoms of salmonella include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of interest in food, dehydration, weakness, and fever.  If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Q:  How can I avoid Salmonella infection?

A:  Like it states on our BARF Diet bags, make sure to handle your pet’s food like you would any raw meat product.  Wash your hands, utensils, food bowls and working surfaces with hot soapy water after coming into contact with raw meat.  Also, make sure to use a plastic bag or plastic glove when coming into contact with your pet’s stools as salmonella may be present.  As an added precaution, avoid allowing your pet to lick you right after eating.

Q:  How can I tell if my product is part of the recall?

A:  Only the BARF Lamb Patties and the BARF Combo Patties produced on July 27th, 2012 are being recalled.  The bag will have a white sticker towards the top, and the sticker will display a Use By date of 07/27/2013.  If you have recalled product at your home, please dispose of the product in a safe manner (i.e. in a securely covered trash receptacle) and contact Christopher Hampson at 1-866-282-2273 for a replacement or a refund.

On February 11, 2013, Specialty Commodities, Inc. initiated a voluntary product recall of parsley flakes distributed to United Pet Group and other pet food suppliers because the products may have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Specialty Commodities, Inc. distributed the products to United Pet Group on May 30, 2012, and August 29, 2012. WEST DES MOINES, IA – Hy-Vee, Inc. today issued a voluntary recall of certain bags of Hy-Vee dog food due to elevated levels of a chemical contaminant commonly found in corn.

Routine random tests conducted by the Iowa Department of Agriculture indicated higher-than-normal levels of aflatoxin in some samples of Hy-Vee dog food produced at a Kansas City plant operated by Pro-Pet, LLC.

Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities.  Pets which have consumed this product and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should consultant a veterinarian.

The recalled products carry three different “Best By” dates and were distributed to Hy-Vee stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin between October 26, 2012 and January 11, 2013.

Hy-Vee officials emphasized the recall is voluntary and only conducted as a precautionary measure. No illnesses have been reported in dogs consuming the product, and the product does not pose a health risk to humans handling it. Hy-Vee officials have also removed all potentially affected products from Hy-Vee stores.

Nutri-Vet, LLC Recalls Nutri-Vet and Nutripet Chicken Jerky Products Because Of Possible
Salmonella Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - February 20, 2013 - Nutri-Vet, LLC. of Boise, ID is voluntarily recalling its Nutri-Vet and NutriPet Chicken Jerky Products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can sicken animals that eat these products and humans are at risk for Salmonella poisoning from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the pet products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these symptoms after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has any of these signs, please contact your veterinarian.

Nutri-Vet is recalling the lot numbers below because the manufacturer of an ingredient used in the products below informed us of the possibility of Salmonella presence at the manufacturing facility, although no positive test results have been found on Nutri-Vet or NutriPet products to date.

The recalled Chicken Jerky Treats were distributed nationwide through online sales and in retail stores from April 2012 through February 2013 with Best By Dates ranging from April 20, 2014, through October 3, 2014.

The United States based supplier has ceased the production and distribution of the ingredient supplied to Nutri-Vet while FDA and the manufacturer continue investigating as to the source of the potential contamination. No other products made by Nutri-Vet, LLC are included in the recall.

Kasel Industries has not received any reports of illnesses to date in connection with these products.

No other products made by Kasel Associated Industries are included in the recall. Specifically no products with best by dates after the specified ranges are included in the recall.

NATURE’S VARIETY ISSUES VOLUNTARY RECALL OF ONE BATCH OF INSTINCT® RAW ORGANIC CHICKEN FORMULA FOR DOGS & CATS DUE TO POSSIBLE HEALTH RISK

Nature’s Variety has announced a voluntary recall of one batch of Instinct® Raw Organic Chicken Formula with a "Best if Used By" date of 10/04/13. This action is being taken because pieces of clear plastic may be found in some bags and could cause a potential choking risk to pets. The source of plastic has been identified and the issue has been resolved.

The affected product is strictly limited to a single batch of Organic Chicken Formula with the “Best if Used By” date of 10/04/13. This includes:

• UPC# 7 69949 60137 1 – Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula medallions, 3 lbs. bag
• UPC# 7 69949 70137 8 – Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula medallions, 27 lbs. case
• UPC# 7 69949 60127 2 – Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula patties, 6 lbs. bag
• UPC# 7 69949 70127 9 – Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula patties, 36 lbs. case

The "Best if Used By" date is located on the back of the package below the "Contact Us" section. The affected product was distributed through retail stores and internet sales in the United States and Canada. No other products were impacted.

Nature’s Variety became aware of a potential issue after receiving a consumer complaint. The source of the issue was identified and resolved. To date, there have been no reports of harm to dogs or cats.

The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily withdrawing its Hartz ® Chicken Chews ™ and Hartz ® Oinkies® Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken for dogs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - January 25, 2013 — The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily withdrawing its Hartz Chicken Chews and Hartz Oinkies Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken for dogs in the United States because they contain trace amounts of unapproved antibiotic residue.

We are taking this action after recent Hartz testing found trace amounts of unapproved antibiotic residue in samples of Hartz® Chicken Chews™ and Oinkies® Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken products. Even though two-thirds of the products we tested did not contain antibiotic residues, we would rather be overly cautious by voluntarily withdrawing these products from the market.

These antibiotics are approved for use in poultry in China and other countries, including European Union member states, but are not among those approved in the U.S. Based on the FDA’s review of the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets (NYSDAM) results, there is no evidence that raises health concerns, and these results are highly unlikely to be related to the reports of illnesses FDA has received related to jerky pet treats.

Immediately upon learning of this finding, Hartz contacted the FDA to share our test results and execute a nationwide voluntary withdrawal. There have been no known illnesses to date associated with the consumption of these products.

“Upon learning about the nationwide voluntary withdrawal of several other brands of chicken jerky products through media reports, Hartz acted immediately to begin additional testing to determine if the same unapproved antibiotic residues were present in our products,” said Sean McNear, Sr. Director of Quality and Regulatory at Hartz Mountain.

There is no indication that the trace amounts of unapproved antibiotic residue are linked to the FDA's ongoing investigation of chicken jerky products produced in China. The trace amounts of antibiotic residue do not pose a health or pet safety risk.

No other Hartz products are affected by this withdrawal.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - January 9, 2013 - Milo’s Kitchen® today announced that it is voluntarily recalling its Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers home-style dog treats from retailer shelves nationally. No other Milo’s Kitchen® products are affected.

On Monday, New York State’s Department of Agriculture informed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Company that trace amounts of residual antibiotics had been found in several lots of Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky. After consultation with the New York Department of Agriculture and FDA, the company decided to voluntarily recall Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers, which are both sourced from the same chicken suppliers.

The use of antibiotics to keep chickens healthy and disease-free while raising them is standard practice in poultry production for both human and pet food. However, the antibiotics found in the products were unapproved and should not be present in the final food product.

Milo’s Kitchen® has a comprehensive safety testing program in place for its products from procurement through manufacturing and distribution. Part of that program involves extensive testing for a wide range of substances commonly used to ensure the health of chickens. However, Milo’s Kitchen® did not test for all of the specific antibiotics found by the New York Department of Agriculture.

"Pet safety and consumer confidence in our products are our top priorities," said Rob Leibowitz, general manager, Pet Products. "While there is no known health risk, the presence of even trace amounts of these antibiotics does not meet our high quality standards. Therefore, today we decided to recall both products and asked retailers to remove the products from their shelves.

This lot of product has yielded a positive test for Salmonella when tested by the Colorado Dept. of Agriculture. Carolina Prime Pet is not aware of any reported cases of illness related to this product.

This product was distributed from about the first of September until now.

Customers who purchased the recalled dog treats should discontinue use immediately, and return items to the purchase location for replacement, refund, or discard.

No other products are included in this recall.
