16  Dry and Wet Foods / Innova / Testing for Acetomenaphine on: June 09, 2007, 04:03:56 PM
Hi Guys,
I wasn't sure where to post this but since I contacted Natura and I feed my kids Innova, I thought I would post it here.
I was wondering if anyone has contacted Natura about testing for acetomenaphine and the other toxins besided only melamine and cyanuric acid?  (ammeloride, ammelorine, aminopterin)
I contacted them the other day to ask them but the representative with whom I spoke to said that since they test for cyanuric acid and the results are negative, the other toxins would be negative as well since they seem to be in conjunction with each other.  I am a little bit nervous about this because now from reading an article on Itchmo, some people who have sent their foods to be tested (so far only Pet Pride and Science Diet) have come out positive for cyanuric acid and acetomenaphine but negative for melamine.  I know that Kumpi states on their site that they test for the ammeloride, ammelorine, and aminopterin and of course the melamine and cyanuric acid.  But Natura only states the melamine and cyanuric acid.  Also, I found a person posted on Itchmo in regards to having called Midwest Labs which test for Natura) about their testing and he said that they are not capable of testing for acetomenaphine in their laboratory.  I wonder if they have the capacity to test for the other toxins?  Anyway, just a bit worried here... as I did notice my dogs drinking a bit more water lately and urinating a little more.  Could be just because of the warmer weather though, you think?
Sorry for rambling, but if anyone has any experience with contacting or acquiring any info on this, if you would be so kind to post...

***Sorry if I misspelled anything!!***

18  Dogs / General Dog Health Discussion / My dog threw up on: June 03, 2007, 10:06:37 PM
One of my dogs threw up thier dinner tonight.  I stepped outside to water my plants and when I came back there it was in the hallway.  I fed them some cooked stew beef with their kibble (Innova) It did go through my mind about the livestock feed I must admit...  I am sure the reason one of them threw up was just because I caught them eating grass earlier and there was  a few grass blades in the you-know-what.   If it was my young dog, she always throws up when she eats grass, if it was my older one, he hardley ever throws up.  So, I am a bit nervous if it was the older one.  I can't help but wonder if something is wrong now when this happens you know...  before all of the recall stuff, I would worry a little bit, but knew that it is common for dogs to throw up especially after eating grass.  Now I wonder if they may be poisoned!

Evy,
I was wondering, I am not sure if you have already posted this or not or if it is in any of your other infromation and I am just missing it...  but what are the ratio's of the omega fatty acids in the dog food adult formula?  I know that you mention the omega 6 but was wondering the %'s  of both the 6 and 3 to balance each other off.

Cindy,
I wanted to let you know that when I did the tests, the specific gravity came out really low... like in the 1.008-1,010 range on one of my dogs and on the other it came out like 1.010-1.015.  Both showed a trace of protein.  Anyway I got really scared so I took in a urine sample to the vet and she compared the strips against her own...  It came back close but a bit higher on hers...   She said that she doesn't ever like to trust the specific gravity ratio's on the strips because they aren't sensative enough.  She sent the samples in to the lab where they came back in the normal ranges... something like 1.030 and 1.040.  So if you see that your specific gravity comes back low, just remember that it is probably just the strips.  She (the vet) also told me that the reagents on the strips are great on the other catagories... just not good to measure the specific gravity.

I looked at this food once too, it seems good.  I would have to go back and read a bit more into the company but it seems to be a good food.

Snarlah,
I am so sorry for your little Joe!  I am sorry for the pain you feel and the suffering it caused both your family and your little Joe.  I would have the same concerns as you, but maybe you can save a life too...

Thats how I was... measuring everything.  It got to be quite messy.  It was bad hehe.  Anyway, I started to get nervous when my oldest started to be less active.  All of a sudden, he was really lethargic.  I got scared!  Then, to top it all off, I asked a dog nutritionalist about my home made diet and she said that as long as I know how to balance the calcium and phosphorus ratios than that is ok, but I really don't have a clue.  It seems as if home made food really helped him at first, but then he had no energy.  I also started giving them raw.  Finally, I started them on a commercial diet with raw meat and veggies on top.  He seems to be much better now, but I really wish that I could just keep them on all home cooked meals.  I would feel MUCH safer.  I just opened a new bag today.  My second bag since I re-introduced the commercial kibble and I couldn't help but pray for the bag of food!!!  Another reason I really liked giving them the home cooked diet is because, I was buying all organic ingredients.  (still who knows right maybe just piece of mind)

Im glad to hear all is better!!  Grin  Pumpkin works great for both diarrhea and constipation.  If you are feeding home-cooked meals you may just want to consider increasing your veggies a little bit to provide a little more fiber.

I had the same thing happen to me Davis.  Yesterday, well actually last night I couldn't pull up the forums page.  The Pet Food List pulled up but not the forums.  I got the same message.
29  Dogs / Dog Nutrition / Re: What is safe to feed a 10 week old beagle puppy dry foods? on: May 26, 2007, 07:51:07 PM
IMO- I chose a Natura Product after having fed them homemade food.  I was VERY nervous and still am everytime I feed them.  Although, I am not as nervous as I would be if I would be feeding something else.  I went with them because of their effort to inform the public of their testing and that they have close relationships with their suppliers and are all USA ingredients.  To be honest with you, I don't fully trust anyone though.  I think it will be that way from now on.  I also read that Kumpi (many posting here in these forums) has tested for all of the toxins (the one's that were disclosed to us from the FDA)  and all tests have come back negative.  I can't say for sure what food is SAFE nor do I think anyone can, but I think (IMO) I feel safer with these.  Good luck!!  I love beagles very mischievous Cheesy

I also read that it isn't good to feed raw eggs...  due to a bacteria in the egg white I think, but I am not sure.  I also cook my eggs (Hard boiled) and give them to them shell and all 1-2 times a week. (I crack the shell really fine before tiving it to them)
Willie, your menu sounds really good!
