1  Dry and Wet Foods / Evo / 2 dogs on Evo RM on: May 04, 2007, 01:23:40 PM
My dogs were never exposed to recalled foods.  The older one had been fed Pedigree all her life, wet and dry.  She really liked the beef chunks in gravy.  I decided immediately upon the recall that it could expand and I wasn't taking any chances with a new puppy in the mix as well.  So I switched them (after lots of research) to Innova Evo RM (red meat) dry, and began making their wet food.
It's been over a month now, and they're doing very well.  Less waste in the back yard, loving dinner time, and the wet food I cook has become a routine that is very much worth it, although I will have to trust something else when I go on vacations.  Right now I'll just cook them their yams, carrots, zucchini and brown rice with chicken and broth, and enjoy the supper-time happy dance from my little one.
2  Dry and Wet Foods / Natural Balance / Natural Balance Venison & Green Pea cat food on: May 04, 2007, 01:16:12 PM
This topic has drifted away a bit, but I wonder if anyone ever got a satisfactory response to what that rice protein concentrate was doing in a non-grain cat food.  I emailed them twice and got back canned answers that never addressed the discrepancy. At this point I have washed my hands of them reluctantly, as my special-needs cat really liked the food.  Does anyone have something that addresses this?
Happy healthy Friday, and let's wish for no recalls for the weekend!

I wanted to share the response I got from Red Barn Bully Sticks, pasted below.
Kelly,

Thank you for your interest in Redbarn Pet Products. Our new web site is currently under construction and one of the things that we will be adding is the ingredients for our products. The only thing added to our bully sticks is a diluted solution of human grade liquid smoke, just like the kind you can buy in the grocery stores. We add this to mask some of their natural odor.

According to previous news reports the company involved in the recall of bully sticks was T.W. Enterprises. We are not in any way affiliated with T.W. Enterprises not do we obtain any ingredients from them.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thank you,

Sue

Subject: bully sticks ingrediants

Hello

As you know, everyone is concerned about what they're feeding their pets right now.  I want to know what you use on your bully sticks in the processing for the smoky flavoring.  It smells like a misquite flavoring.  It would be nice if your web-site had ingredients listed, as there are so many people out there double-checking their pet foods now-a-days.

At any rate, if I cannot get an ingredient list from you on everything you coat the bully sticks with, I can only assume that you may have some of the tainted ingredients so please let me know.  I also note that there is a disclaimer on your site regarding other bully sticks.  Can you tell me which ones were recalled?  I'd very much appreciate your assistance.  Have a nice day

Kelly

Does anyone have any information on this product?  The web page says "smoked" but there is no ingredient list on the product or the web site, and I haven't heard back via email for my inquiry.  Gotta know if I have to worry about this treat ... my puppy is SO wanting his next fix!  Thanks everyone ... here's to health and happiness to all your pets and peeps.

Hi - has anyone tried Feline Pine or have any (good or bad) information on it?  I loved the stuff.  It's kind of the opposite of clumping.  You have these pellets that disintegrate when in contact with liquid.  Really easy to clean up, and not waste litter.
Unfortunately, my cat has become rather stubborn and doesn't like the feel of the pellets under his toes, in his old age.  Since he has IBD and getting him to the box before he goes is a challange in itself sometimes, I have to make the box as pleasant as possible for him, so I gave up the pellets a while ago.  I always loved flushable stuff too, until I found out what it was doing to the sea otters.  Cat poop is apparently very toxic to some marine life, and even the sanitation systems don't get rid of whatever toxin or parasite is in there.  I'm back to using a waste can for litter box clean-up.
6  Cats / General Cat Health Discussion / Re: Looking for a pet-friendly way to rid house of bugs on: April 26, 2007, 01:47:40 PM
Hi
A while back I had a lukemia cat and needed to rid the house of fleas.  My vet at the time suggested I use Borax powder.  Yep, the laundry soap.  Apparently insects have this wax coating on them that breaks down with contact with soap.  So I sprinkled a continuous line of the stuff around the perimeter of my house (and I lived in an old shack in an orchard in Florida so there were lots of bugs) and it worked!  Try not to vaccuum it up ... they need to get it on them in order to effect them.  Doesn't work on spiders, they are different, but most insects left my home alone after that.  And since I didn't have the other bugs, spiders weren't as common since there was nothing to eat in the house.  As for flying things, look into a natural spray.  Usually rosemary extract, if I remember correctly.  It's been a while.
