Dry and Wet Foods / By Nature / Re: By Nature

By Nature DOES have pouches as well as cans. The cans are organic, the pouches are not. Saw them in Petsmart today. I picked up one of each flavor of the cans.... we'll see how the kitties like them! You can tell they're made by Evangers... the cans have the same water/rust marks on them as Evangers.

Recall Related Information / General Recall Discussion / Re: NOW what are you feeding?

For dry we are still finishing up bags of food we have had for a while, but when they are gone I will be feeding Cal Nat Chicken & Brown Rice. For wet food I rotate the following flavors (my kitties will not eat the same thing too many times in a row : Cal Nat Salmon & Sweet Potato Cal Nat Venison & Brown Rice Evangers Turkey & Squash Evangers Mackerel Felidae Chicken & Rice Merrick New England Boil I tried tons of different kinds and found my kitties will both eat all of the above and seem to really enjoy those flavors. The Evangers chicken and EVO and all other Merricks flavors were not accepted. I don't know if it's good to feed so many different wet foods but they like variety and are not prone to upset tummies, so it's working for us.

This is the only flavor I haven't tried yet. I found that my kitties go nuts for the New England Boil, so I've added that one to their menu. You can actually see the chunks of real sardine in there. If you've got a winner, stick with it!

You're getting a great deal on canned food. 89 cents!! The cheapest place here sells the turkey for 1.19/can and the mackerel for 1.29/can. I can't get California Natural cans any cheaper than 1.29/can, and the cheapest food they have is Felidae at .99/can. So consider yourself lucky!

Dry and Wet Foods / Innova / Re: Innova Senior and Lite for Cats

My cats have been eating the Reduced Fat dry since March and they're both doing great. I think there's a lot of paranoia amongst people since the pet food recalls. If a pet gets sick, the first thing that comes to mind is to blame the food, even if there's no proof. This food has high carbs though, which I don't like and I will be switching them to California Natural once the Innova is gone, and will be buying a small bag of EVO to mix in their wet food and to use as "treats."

Dry and Wet Foods / California Natural / Re: Natura Canned

Fed my cats a can of the Salmon & sweet potato last week and they absolutely loved it. Have a can of venison and brown rice to try next. I will definitely be continuing to buy Natura cans. The fact that they are testing all finished products is all I need to hear. Also, you can look at it this way: instead of thinking that you're giving Menu foods money, think that you're giving the Natura company money in order to build their own canning facility which in the end will take away a ton of money from Menu.

Yes but have you noticed on the cans that the only ingredient that says organic is the actual first ingredient? The can of chicken & rice I have says, "organic chicken", but then none of the rest of the ingredients such as chicken liver, oat bran, etc have "organic" in front of them which leads me to believe they're not.
Evangers has 2 good flavors with ALL organic ingredients. Even the guar gum is organic.

My cat had diarrhea after eating the Thanksgiving Day dinner. In her whole 10 year life she had never had diarrhea before, so I definitely think it was something in there that upset her tummy. Don't know what, cuz she has eaten other flavors and been fine, although she puked 2 other flavors up right after eating them and she is not normally a food puker either. So, I don't know.
Jenny you may want to try a fish flavor of Merrick if they don't like the turkey/chicken ones. I tried New England Broil yesterday and they both loved it. It was the first Merrick's flavor they ate where they actually licked their bowls clean. So, I may be buying that for them in the future. Every cat is different so you may just need to try all the flavors to determine which your kitties prefer!

My kitties don't like Merrick anymore. They were never really crazy about it... it was hit or miss. One would like a flavor while the other hated it and vice versa. They both HATED Turducken. I had to throw most of it away! The only one they both ate was Southern Comfort but even that wasn't a huge hit. We still have 2 more flavors to try but I don't think I'll be buying it anymore.
Another good grain free food to try is California Natural Salmon & Sweet Potato. Both of my kitties absolutely loved this one! I know it's made by Menu, but since Natura is testing all of its products now, I feel safer feeding it. Right or wrong, I really trust Natura. I believe they're sincere about wanting to keep pets safe. I hope I'm right!

Just because they won't say doesn't mean they're hiding something. It's all a bunch of legal crap and they could probably get sued if they disclose their manufacturer. Why the manufacturer wants it to be a secret is beyond me, but that seems to be the way the pet food industry works. Lies and secrecy. Very weird. Anyway, it's widely believed on the net that Evangers manufactures Canidae/Felidae wet food. So I think you can be safe in feeding it to your pets.

Has anyone tried the "game meats"? They're for dogs, but I'm thinking since my kitties love the whole mackerel, they may like some 100% meat cans as well. I may look in the dog section for those next time I shop.

As posted elsewhere ( might have been here or on Itchmo), Evangers has stopped using menadione as of August last year. Someone sent them an e-mail asking about it and they replied that anything dated Aug 2011 or later does not have menadione in it. They are just using up the labels.

Thanks for making me laugh. Lacy, this may be a stupid question but do you mash up the fish really good? My kitties won't eat chunks but I smash it to bits and they clean their bowls. I have to say I continue to be impressed with Evangers. I also feed the organic turkey and chicken cans. I feel really comfortable feeding them organic. It's the only brand I've found that has all organic ingredients... even down to the guar gum! I have a Newman's Own can and noticed it only has organic chicken. The rest is not organic. Kind of misleading. But that's why I now feed Evangers.

Maybe there's no menadione in some of these products because enough Vitamin K occurs naturally in the ingredients so that they don't need to supplement?? I don't know because I am not sure which foods are rich in Vit K, but that could be the reason.
Lacy I hope your kitties like the mackerel. I am now dealing with a picky kitty too! He used to eat everything now he won't eat anything! He refuses every wet brand I try when he was eating it before. I think he is enjoying his new Innova dry food too much and is now a dry food junkie! Luckily my older kitty (who is the smaller of the 2--only 8 lbs), is now eating wet food almost exclusively. She gobbles down everything I give her. However, they both LOVED the mackerel... even my picky one. It's got a lot of gravy and that's his favorite part. I will also be stocking up on it when I go to the store next week!
